Yorkie Yakker | How to begin leash training a puppy My puppy is almost 3 months old. I want to ease him into short walks. He needs new experiences and has lots of energy. So far the harnesses I've found are all too big for him. They so not fit and he hates them. I've rewarded him with treats when he has it on and I don't leave it on him long. I have put in a message for the silk step ins. Hoping he'll like it if it fits better. I was just wondering how all of you began to walk on leash. How old? How long? Am I rushing him? Need help please. Thanks |

| Cindys silk harness are perfect for puppies, they are so light weight so they barely know its on.. While she is making it , you may want to try a petco, I got this really cheap 12.00 stepin harness leash combo, and let her walk around the house with it on to get used to it.. It was actually pretty funny because she would chase the leash!! It only took a few times for her to get used to it, because she really liked going to walks!!

| You may be rushing a bit. It is my understanding that at 5 months, yorkies are at their best for training. I leashed trained my yorkie at 5 months and it was pretty easy going. Everything I taught her at 5 months seem to stick for the rest of her life. Good luck! |

| I was taught to train a dog to walk on my right side. I used to do 30 minutes at a time but I must confess. I carried her when she seemed like she had enough. |

| If your pup is tiny, maybe a ferret harness will fit him? Hamilton Deluxe Ferret Harness & Lead Set I can't find one online with a quick search, but at one of the big box pet stores I got a step in harness for Bella when she was still tiny. At any rate, if you put the leash on the pup and let it drag it around, he'll get used to the feel of a leash. Of course, this can't be done unsupervised, because you don't want him to get snagged on anything. Alternatively, I started mine out with retractable leashes. They were given freedom to explore, but reeled in when appropriate. Also, the pup will want to follow you, so if you walk, he will, too. Worry about "control" at a later date - let him find out that walks are fun, first. And if it's cold, you may wish to wait a bit. |

| You can try a Buddy Belt harness - the size 1 is really tiny. I don't use any other harness on Rio - she wears a size 2 and she is 3.0 lbs. They are made of soft leather and have just one buckle so they are easy to put on. |

| You're not too early! I started Jackson on a leash at 9 weeks old and he was fine! Patience and practice Everything is new to them.

| You should try "chattiesmom's" harnesses and leash. They are silk and sooooo light that my girls don't even notice they are wearing them.

| I would definitely go with a harness. Problem is, when I try to put one on Ruger he fights me. I did put a collar on him -- started a few hours at a time and then left it on. He doesn't mind it at all, and at least he now has an ID tag on him all the time. Walking with him is a whole nother story. He will drag a leash, but as soon as I grab the other end he just freezes. So now when we go for a walk I've got the dog dragging his leash. To get him to stop all I have to do is grab the end of the leash. LOL |
