| stop giving her access to the whole house. Keep her in one room and one room only, at a time. That room must be the room that you are in so she can be supervised by you. In housebreaking/potty training you must be even more active in participation than your puppy is.

| I agree with Ladylavender. She must be contained on one room and watched closely. When she drinks out she goes within 20mins. Otherwise take her out every hour on the hour. When she pees, treat her and praise her. When she eats, she should go out within 20-25 mins as well. It takes lot's of work, patience and a schedule should be a must, IMO. There are sings also that she's going to pee. If she starts sniffing the floor, going in circles scoop her up and out the door she goes. It's really time comsuming but you get out of it what you put in to it. It's worth the couple weeks of constant watching and running outside. |

| The hallway is probably too much room for them, when you are not at home. I would make the place they stay, while you are at work, pretty small. I would even crate them. I would make the crate area only large enough so they could stand, turn and lay back down. After they learn to hold it I would expand the area a little at a time, until you know they are going to hold it the whole time you are gone. Do not give them access to food or water while you are away. Millie was 13 wks old and was able to hold it for 8 - 9 hours. Because of the lack of space, she pretty much slept all day. as she got older and I was comfortable with her not going in the crate, I expanded to an x-pen and made sure her crate was there, toys and another doggie bed so that there was no real visible floor space. What you are training your dog to understand is that this is their "den" and they are not allowed to urinate or defecate in it. (Their mother would be training them on this if they were out in the wild). this progression occurs over time as you trust them more and more. When you are home, you need to keep them with you at all times and keep on a potty schedule. You will also need to make sure that they poo and pee and go for a walk (yes, even if it's cold) before you go to work and lock them up. After you get back from work, another long walk where they are pooping and peeing, again. Dogs like routine. They will get used to this routine and learn what you are trying to teach them. And NO it is not cruel to leave them in the crate that long. If you want a fully trained dog (because you do work) then it's necessary to put the work in first. Eventually, they won't be in the crate anymore and you will have a lovely wonderful behaved dog. Also, when you are home on the week-ends or days off, I would stay at home as much as possible, during this training period, even if it means giving up social activities. either that or you can bring them with you. Just remember, this is only temporary and will last about 6 -7 months, but it is well worth the sacrifice

| This is off topic, but I've been wondering about Caddy. How's he doing? Is he eating better? Did you find a food that he likes?

| 15 weeks is still very young. I would be taking him out of his crate every 20 minutes. If he doesn't go 25 minutes after eating, put him in his crate for 10 minutes and then take him back out and try again. A schedule and patience is a must. Also, make sure he doesn't have free run of your house. After feeding him, you can play, take him potty, and then back in the crate until lunch. Same thing...eat, play, potty, crate. At dinner, eat, play, potty crate. At 8 p.m. a drink of water, play, potty, crate. At 11 p.m. potty. I would also be taking him out several times during the night. If he isn't holding it in his crate, you want to break him of this fast. Sydney's vet said not to trust her until she's at least a year young. Quote:

| I work from 8-5, and I crate my yorkie as well. The crate should only be big enough for your dog to turn around and lay comfortably. Otherwise, she/he will poop or pee in the back and lay up front, and you won't get anywhere. My problem is that she will poop and actually push it under the divider to the other side...smart little pup! I also keep her on a leash with me throughout the house because she has ruined my carpet! I think we're getting there, but she still has accidents every other day... |

| When we got Layla at 9 weeks, everytime we took her out we'd tell her to "Go Potty". Well now at 16 weeks she will go potty almost on command! She still have a pee pad but will let us know she has to go by running to the door. She still has accidents but I think they are more my fault than hers as she is still learning. If your pup is old enough, get her fixed. She may be marking i there is another dog in the house. Yes females mark also. If Layla starts to pee in the house, she gets very load "NO" and stops right off and then we happily go out and she goes and gets lots of "good Girls" Its alot of work! Glad I have Dear Husband to help me out with it! (she's a Daddy's girl!) |
