Default Can't cope with the barking anymore

I love my baby, BUT the barking has to stop. He is such a good baby a lot of the time, but then we get in those moods where he has to have attention, no matter what else is going on, or he is just going to bark/scream at you until you do what he wants. Sometimes I can give in to him, but sometimes it's just not possible. He will sit and look me in the eye and do this horrible high pitched bark that just won't end! My neighbors have complained and the owner of our building says that an occasional bark is one thing and he'll back me up, but when it goes on for an hour or more, it's too much. I've tried pennies in a can, he likes it and gets more revved up. Tried spraying him with water....again, more aggression. Last night, even when he got what he wanted, I was able to fetch with him, he couldn't stop barking....he needed a bath anyway so I finally plunked him in one. That settled him down for a while, but once he was dry he was psychotic again. I love the little nut job and he has a wonderful personality but the barking is driving me barking mad.

Hi I found for Jackson the pennies in the can thing did not work. I rolled up a newspaper one day and whacked it against the coffee table. He hates that sound. I just have to pick it up and the sound of the paper makes him stop right away.

That is all I can offer. Maybe others have better ideas. These dogs do tend to be yappy at times for sure .

Thanks! I'll try it-- maybe the key is to just find some sound that he hates and repeat that. Wish me luck!

Have you tried one of those bark control devices or a citronella spray collar?

if you respond to him occasionally its like playing the lottery for him - he'll try even harder because sometimes he gets a reward. He will keep barking because it sometimes gets him what he wants.
are you able to try completely ignoring him or maybe even leaving the room every time he barks no matter how long he does it (go out / get earplugs?) for a week and see if that reduces the problem?
If that doesnt work could you maybe take him to a training class or ask a trainer for help?

edit - it will probably get worse before it gets better when you start ignoring it.

I have a similar problem only she doesn't just bark at me for attention, we live in a complex where people are pretty active outside like walking and whatnot in front and in back too as it is a boating community and the back is where boat docks are..

So if she is allowed to be downstairs all the time she is constantly growling and barking at people walking around outside (she even barks at people that are ACROSS the canal!!).

The thing is, shes not aggressive towards people at all. Any stranger can come up to her and pet her and she loves it. So I don't even know why she barks like this.

I took someones advice in ordering one of those 'bark repeller' devices. I bought it on eBay for $15 total (free shipping). It's made by Pet Parade if you're interested in getting anything like that. It's also available from amazon.com but their shipping makes it more expensive. I'll let ya know how it works out as soon as I receive it!

Good luck, though. Sorry I am not of more help.

We did the rolled up newspaper with Jack and that worked for us. Good luck!

Oh boy, do I ever know what you mean. When we go outside, Galahad barks and screams at all the kids in the neighborhood, straining to get to them, because he wants them to come pet him. When I bring him in (unpetted by all the kids), he screams at me for about 5 minutes before calming down.

When I leave the house for any reason without him, he whines, then barks, then screams at the door until I come back in. If I don't come back in (gone to the store or something), he keeps it up until my husband can find an effective diversion, but even then, he says he whines the whole time I'm gone.

The only time he's mostly okay if I go outside without him: When my kids are awake for him to play with.

I'm not extremely sick of it yet, lol, but I will tel you that the citronella spray collar and the bark repeller device can NOT get here fast enough.
I'd love to take him to the store with me, but until we get the barking under control, it's not possible.

RamsesMom cannot ignore the barking and let it go and hope he gets tired of it and shuts up, because she lives in an apartment and her neighbors have complained already.

She has to take action, so if the citronella thing will work, that may help while she is out of the apartment.

Take him for a long walk when you can and play fetch with him when you can each day at a certain time and do it for the time you have alotted for it,(try to wear him out!) He may have excess energy and needs to have play time and exercise which is natural for any dog.

What I have done in the past when my dog barks while I am in the room is to pick her up, say "HUSH" sharply and put my hand over her muzzle and gently but firmly keep her mouth closed momentarily. I am not keeping her from breathing! I also squirt water,(from a water bottle with a spray/mist choice when I am further away from her and can't catch her)

My dog became even more defiant and barked more when I squirted her on her back and butt. You should be squirting him with either a mist or gentle stream in his face, not his nose, but in his face for it to be affective. Say hush/quiet,(what ever your word for silence) when you do it. Then reward him imediatly with petting or a treat when he shuts up. You need to sound somewhat aggressive/threatening when you say "hush" not exasperated.

As long as you let him have his way and ignore his behavior,(in this particular case because you have neighbors who will complain) he will be in charge, you have to be the leader and make him do as you tell him to. As long as he gets his way, he will be just like a defiant 2 year old and do what he wants and gets attention from "mom".

If at all possible, and if you have the time, look into taking him to obedience classes, you will learn how to get him to behave and the instructor should be able to observe how you two "behave" together and give you some extra pointers on how to be "Boss" if you need them.

I hope you are able to get him to quiet down before more trouble happens with neighbors

For four years my Jackson barking has been out of control when he is outside. We have tried EVERYTHING !!!

2 weeks ago I got the Citronella collor on ebay I really was very leary of buying it but after using it 1 (maybe 2) times outside my Jackson does not bark when outside. My next door neighbor and I can actually carry on a conversation. It is absolutly amazing.

Our yard has an invisible fence and early in the morning or late at night I will let Jackson outside without it on, Just incase he really see's something bad . During the day when kids, neighbors, mail man are outside its like a dream. I never have had him wear it while he is inside. I love the collar.

I got the bark repeller today, and let me tell ya it worked! When on a walk she started barking at someone almost immediately and I pressed the button and said 'quiet' and she stopped. I did have to do it a couple of times, but she will learn what this means in no time you can just TELL.

I just got that on Saturday and can't believe how the barking has lessened. I'm just tickled pink with it! At first it took a couple of presses to get Maddie to stop, but Libby would stop immediately. Now it only takes one press for Maddie too. I love the little gadget!

The barking with Yorkies is a tuff one
I am in the midst of trying to get my Zach to stop when I tell him

Sometimes it's funny .....
because if he knows I am out of the way where I can't get to him
I say NO Bark! and I stand in front of him
He'll stop then
but if I am in the shower
He knows I can't confront him
and he'll bark as if he's saying Nyaah Nyaah You can't get me

If it didn't make me so angry I'd laugh

But once they get into a barking jag there's nothing that can stop them if you don't train them
The best way is make a loud noise or even use a water pistol
You have to get them out of the barking mindset
Then - you can correct them

I like the Citronella collar idea, but what is the Bark repeller, with the button? Is that one of those "shock" collars?
