| Jasper, no! This is unrelated to my yorkie girl Riley, but I really need to vent. My fiance and I adopted a Sheltie not too long ago and don't get me wrong, he's a smart dog... he's just so stubborn! When we got him he was outside trained but not puppy pad trained. So, we've been trying to puppy pad train him and he will not go on the puppy pad for the life of him! ...I take that back... He went on the puppy pad once... He finally gave up trying to go any where else and so instead of going directly on the puppy pad... He backed his little furrbutt up as far back as it would go and took a crap on my wall. And you know he's smart because he goes once or twice during the day (when we aren't home, I might add) and then leaves about 5 small surprises for mommy and daddy when we wake up in the morning! If potty training wasn't enough... he's starting to bark really bad. I thought we were doing really great with the 'hush' command... apparently, I was wrong. I hardly got any sleep last night because he wouldn't stop barking! He's collaborating with my cats too! The cats will knock over the trash and Jasper will drag it everywhere! I just don't know what to do anymore. I know I have to be patient, but I forgot how difficult it was having a puppy in the house!

| You've gotta remember... Shelties are high energy, working, sheep herding dogs. And they're highly intelligent. They're related to the Border Collie family somewhere down the line which is the #1 breed for intelligence. Which can also mean... they know how to push your buttons. It sounds to me like this dog is not getting enough exercise. Shelties can be known for agility, tricks, guarding, obedience, etc, and if that mind of his isn't being stimulated enough, he will cause trouble. I recommend at minimum 1 hour walk a day. Do you have a fenced in yard? If not, he needs somewhere to run a few times a week. I guarantee with an increase in exercise, the barking and the bad behavior will be put to a minimum. As for the potty pads... if he came to you trained outdoors, is there a specific reason you need him to be trained on potty pads? You probably confused him since he was trained NOT to go inside, and now you're telling him it's okay. If I had a dog come to me potty trained outdoors, I'd take high advantage of that. If he's pottying when you're not home, I recommend a crate or an ex-pen. He has way too much freedom right now and not enough boundaries, rules or limitations.

| I really don't think it's the not enough exercise thing. We take him to the park once a day for more than an hour. He runs around and plays with us and the ducks and then tires himself and and comes and lays down. I do agree about the too much freedom. We just moved and the crate we have is packed up somewhere and I've been going out of my mind trying to find it. My fiance, however, never really liked putting any of our animals in crates. I swear, he lets them get away with murder. His excuse 'their just babies!'. Like I said we do take him outside and he still does go when he's outside (unlike my yorkie who's so used to puppy pads, she seems iffy going outside. She actually went inside off of our porch just to go use the puppy pad. Haha.), but we'd rather him be puppy pad trained because it's just a whole lot easier for us. Riley is already puppy pad trained, so we don't have to take her out (besides our family outings. ). I know it's just him pushing my buttons and I may need to switch up a few things. I was just really irritated this morning. Thanks for the advice though!
