| Winter Is Coming.... HI All, I was wondering what all of you do to get your dog to go potty outside when it is cold and maybe even snowing. Toby is almost 11 weeks, and I am wanting to get him ready to start going outside when it is freezing out. Plus I am not all that thrilled to have to go out in the middle of the night when it is below zero. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

| My advice to you is PRAY Seriously, 11 weeks is still pretty young. You could still do potty pads, no? Chewy is 7 months and he still does potty pads. I rarely take him out to do "his business", it's just for socializing, hehe. |

| He only uses peepee pads when we leave him. When we leave him, it is in the bathroom and we have his food and water and peepee pad and his bed and toys. He never has used the pads very much. We were trying to train him to go outside. I heard of someone that actually did use kitty litter in a doggie litter box, I would try that one maybe??? I do leave a pad down for him all day in the same spot in front of the door just incase he has 2 go and I miss it, but he hardly ever uses it. We really really want him to go outside though. I am afraid if I try with the pads he will get confused. They are just a last resort for him-----(we wish)---he will go on them as he pleases. We are planning on putting a fence up so when he has to go we can just let him out---eventually..if he ever gets the hang of this whole potty outside thing. I just don't want my baby to use a peepee pad all the time. HOPE this made some kind of since!

The cold hurries my poor little guy along nicely. But there are some considerations: 1. Get a jacket, a nice velcro one can go on in a jiffy right over the harness. 2. Make sure you are training for potty on command. 3. Have a cleared regular spot that you always go to. 4. Try to use good jugement. A pup this young is about the size of your hand right? Think of how fast your hand gets cold. With that in mind, you can take them right out to the spot (when you know they have to go) say "Go potty" or "Get busy" or whatever, and stand there like a tree. The pup will go eventually. Treat, praise "Good potty", and run back inside! After a few months this drill will be pretty easy for your pup and they will know what to do when you go to the spot and they hear the word. | |

| HEY THANKS FOR THE GREAT ADVICE. I KNOW THAT IT CAN BE ALOT HARDER TO TRAIN A PUPPY IN THE WINTER B/C THEY DON'T REALLY WANT TO GO OUT. BUT WE DO WHAT WE HAVE TO DO FOR OUR BABIES. I JUST DON'T WANT WHAT WE HAVE ACCOMPLISHED SO FAR TO GO DOWN THE DRAIN WHEN IT GETS COLDER, AND HE DECIDES HE DOESN'T WANT TO GO OUTSIDE ANYMORE BUT I AM PLANNING ON BEING CONSISTENT.

| It doesn't snow here or even get that cold, but this will be Bailey's first winter (he was born in Jan). He is trained to go potty outside & I plan on keeping it that way. I don't like the idea of potty pads. Since it doesn't get that cold here, I doubt it'll be a problem. Good luck |

| Snickers is trained and she is 11 weeks now, but I think it is cause the Danes go out and they are on a schedule. They will go in the rain but want right back in which is fine with me, at least they wait to go out and not go in the house. They all sleep all night and then go out when we get up at 6, then out again by 8:30 when kids go to school and then again around noon when we get home and around 3:30 when the kids get home then around 7 or so and then they are good till morning again. No messes in our house I love it!! Now if we can get Snickers and Jasmine to stop getting into everything!! I would be even happier. Sky is just a old mama and lays around most of the time.

| We too live on Ohio and it does get very cold! Bundle them up!!!!! You never know, he may love the snow!!! Luig loved it last year!!! hehe!!! It was soo crazy!!!! We would clear an area out for him to potty, and he would climb the snow piles and do his business there! And not go where there was no snow!!! And he would love to run thru the snow and roll around in it!!! SO I let him!!!! Not for too long though!! And what I did was, before we went outside, I put a towel in the dryer to get nice and toasty for him!!! When we came in, I would grab the warm towel out of the dryer, and bundle him up!!!! He loved it!!!!!! So I plan on doing that agin this year!!! Good luck!!!
