| Refuses to poop outside!!!! Hello there! So almost a month ago we started training for outside potty!!! I could not wait. We have two little dudes, Teddy (4years) and Pippo (8months). They have both been trained to go on a potty pad. They did OK with that. Too many accidents and we are planning to have a baby soon so we didn't want a yummy CHEW TOY for the baby! It has been going well, actually a little better than I thought. We do still have accidents but usually only when we are not home. Pippo is doing very well and has gotten used to going potty outside. They both have not grasped going to the door when they have to go yet. They both seem to go toward the potty pad, that's when i swoop in and we go out! The problem we are having is with Teddy (our older one). He has always been very shy about going potty in front of people and will actually avoid it. If someone was in the room with his pad he would go in another room. Knowing this I knew he would be harder to train outside. So whats happening is when we go out (I notice it in the morning mostly) Pippo can barely hold it and runs out, goes #1+2 within the first 3mins! I always stand outside with them both for praise and to make sure they go! Teddy on the other hand will just go #1 (on like every bush) and never #2. I think he has gone #2 literally 4 times outside in the past month. He literally waits for us to leave for work and goes either near the back door or somewhere random. I have no idea why he will not go outside. Any clues???!!! If this happens when we are home i will take the poo and put it outside and show him saying "potty outside". I try to be nice so he knows its "fun!!" Sorry it was so long! Any help WILL help!!!

| Dogs feel vulnerable when they are pooping .... and many will try to do it in private What I would suggest is take the little guy on a long walk about an hour or two after he eats walking and activity actually gets the metabolism motor going and will make him want to go Also dogs are prone to mark areas with their urine and feces to let other dogs know they were there so it's good news that you have nature on your side When he does go you praise him and treat him to high heaven and he will get the message pretty soon

| If you just keep up with what you are doing, he will get it eventually I agree with the above poster, try taking him on long walks so he has to go outside. Then praise him to high heaven. Also, take his poo from the pads and place it outside. Have you considered bell training them? He might take more interest in going outside for the poo if you make it fun by using a bell, or potty bells

| Smokie gets a treat every time he pottys outside, #1 or 2. I have never used a potty pad for him. He has been expected to go outside since we got him. And since the first time he went outside, he gets a treat. I get the good healthy treats too. They are called Jerky Treats. I get the Beef. They are like long sticks of beef jerky only very soft. I break off a small piece. Now when he pottys outside, he will come sit at my feet waiting for his treat. If I haven't take one outside with me, soon as we get in the house, he flies in and jumps on the corner of the bed, just staring down the drawer where they are kept. Treat training has worked like gold with him. Your older dog is obviously going to take a bit longer, but keep him outside until he does his business. If you bring him in before he is done, its obvious he will go inside. You might even consider taking away the potty pad. That is just welcoming him to go inside. Use the treats - if he pees, he gets a treat - if he pees twice, he gets two pieces of treats. When he goes #2, he get a treat. He will get it soon. Also, you need to take him on a regular basis for a while. He doesn't know to go to the door. He's always been allowed to potty in the house. So its up to you to retrain him. Take him every 30 mins if you have to. If you have a fenced yard, leave him outside until you've seen him go. You can either sit outside, or watch through the window. But when he does go, its treat time! Make sure you take him when he first wakes up, or shortly after he eats, etc. Sooner or later he will get the idea. Also, if he sees the younger one getting a treat and he is not, he will figure out why. I have never used potty pads, ever. Not even when I worked. Our older dogs which we do not have anymore, would wait all day until we came home from work. Also, if you have a fenced yard, and a safe area, a doggie door might be an option so they can go when they need to. Or put him in a crate while you are gone. A small one, if its too big he will potty in the crate. Then take him directly outside until he does his business, then treat. They say its hard to teach an old dog new tricks. But I believe you can do it. Also, when he pottys in the house, you should show it to him, and in a stern voice tell him no! Then take it outside. I'm sure with the major change he is very confused right now. Best of luck to you! Reva - Smokie's mama |

| Thank you, all of you! I will definetly try your advise. I do think by taking away the pad and giving lots of praise and treats will work. I also decided to use belly bands while we are at work to see if that teaches him to hold it better. Thanks again!
