| It's embarassing going on walks... I am having trouble with Couver on his walks. He is making a habit of growling at every stranger. This is embarassing, and I do not want people to think that my dog is aggressive. I am consistently giving him a firm "No!", but he just continues like I said nothing. I don't know why he's started this recently We live at at apartment complex, and everytime we walk past the pool and he hears splashing in the water, he growls and barks. I want him to not react to this and be fine. What can I do?

| Buddy does this also but only on our night walks. Ceaser Milan said to use your finger's and grab the dog in the side, not hard but lightly like their mother would do with her mouth to correct a pup. You have to watch and catch him before he reacts in order to correct him. It works. When you do this also say NO! |

Thor's Human Donating Member | I would use 'Distract and Reward'. When you see someone approaching, take him off to the side, put him in a Sit, and give him a treat. I have generally found this more effective than correction. Thor gets really barky around other dogs on walks, and so now when I see a dog approaching, I start praising him. He has no idea what he's doing right, but it seems to give him the confidence to pass the dog without going nuts. Then I treat him for his good behavior. You could use this as you pass the swimming pool.

I want him to not react to this and be fine. What can I do?[/QUOTE Roxy goes bonkers over the dishwasher which runs so quietly that it amazes me how upset she gets. The other night when she started her barking at it, I picked her up & her treat cup, sat on the floor right up against the dishwasher. Sat quietly with her & gave her a treat every so often for being quiet also. Did this maybe 5 or so minutes. She was doing fine at this point, so I let her up & no problem after that. I haven't run dishwasher since, so won't know if she's OK with it until next time. If she starts with the barking, I'll repeat what I did before. Maybe trying the same thing will help your little one with the pool splashing. If no one splashing, it may be possible for you to lean over & splash water. Give lots of praise & treats when deserved. I saw Cesar do something like this with a dog that had a big issue with the toaster. Thought I'd give it a try. So far so good!

Thor's Human Donating Member | Do it when YOU see the dog. You need to get the dog attentive before they see the other dog/person and flip out. The idea is that most of their attention will be taken up by waiting for the treat as the other dog/person passes by, and they will gradually develop impulse control in that situation.

| Im going to try these tips too. Roman is the sweetest boy and loves everyone but he barks and barks when people and dogs walk by. He's ok once he can sniff them and he usually tries to play but while their walking up it's awful! He sounds so vicious!

| I am so glad someone started this post. My puppy who who turns 8 months this week and we adopted about a month ago is doing the same thing. We took him for his first walk the other day. We were so happy we didn't even have to train him on his harness, he walks like he's been doing it for a long time. Suddenly, we were passing by a park with a couple of dogs, the owners came to say hi to my dogs and lo and behold, the smallest of my baby started barking and jumping like crazy. He is actually mean.. it was so funny. He won't stop either. So, we just walked away and he stopped. I will definitely try the treat thing next time. |
