| Training them NOT to chew cords? Penny has taken to chewing electrical cords the past few days. She chewed the end off of an old coffee maker we were going to throw out, so that wasn't such a big deal. It was unplugged and by the back door. We figured she thought we left it there for her. Now she is going for broke and chewing every wire she can find. She chewed through an extension cord yesterday and must have gotten a pretty good buzz and started barking at the cord. We tried to pile things around cords to keep her from getting to any more and she made it to a surge protector cord that is quite thick and chewed 1/2 through it in no time flat. It was like she went under my desk, I wondered why she was under there and she had already bitten through the outer coating. Is there a way to train her not to chew cords? I don't see how we can possibly hide every cord in the house because all the plugs are on her level. Ideas anyone? |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | have you tried spraying them with bitter apple? i did this with mine when she was a puppy and it stopped her dead in her tracks. if this doesn't work, you can also use solid deodorant or tobasco sauce. anything that tastes bad that is non-harmful. there are also cord covers you can buy to place the cords in so she can't get to them.

| My four month old Krystal likes cords too. At least in my bed room. She chewed half through my brand new hair dryer's cord. I knew she didn't like that thing. Glad it was only $15, but now I don't like the cheaper one I bought. I caught her trying my phone charger cord. Stopped her before any real damage. I may have to try the bitter apple thing. She has chewed on carpet, a sheep skin, the wall. (She like dirty underwear too, I guess we could go crotchless! ) I'll be watching this thread for more hints. |

| Ooh.... very dangerous This has to be stopped before your puppy gets hurt Alot of dogs are hurt or killed because of electricution First all cords that don't have to be within your pups reach have to be put away Then you need to put deterrant spray on the ones that remain bitter apply or ucky puppy spray and train you pup to stay away and drop it

| When Bree was around 4 months she use to do the same thing. I started spraying the cords with a little bit of the bitter apple spray and it worked, now she refuses to go near cords.

| We bitter apple sprayed the daylights out of every cord in reach during Nikko's first month of living with us because we were so worried for his safety (all our cords and outlets are at his level too). Since then, he has chewed a variety of other things he shouldn't, but he has never touched a cord. Definitely get some sort of taste deterrent - everyone has had great suggestions on this thread so far. Lauren & Nikko |
