| ![]() ...on the carpet! Our Rupert is 4 months old. We have never been able to train him to use a puppy pad or to hold it while he's out and about in our home. Here's his situation: Great in a crate. Stays in all night (or until we come get him, without any crying whatsoever). When we are at work, he is with Daphne, our 10 week old female, in our laundry room. There is a puppy pad in there with them. Daphne uses the pad, but Rupert prefers to hold it until we get home for lunch breaks. We never see accidents in the laundry room. (So we know he can hold it outside the crate) When he is playing in the living room, which is the only other room he has access to in the house, he has no problem just peeing whenever he feels like it. We do take him out every 1.5-2 hours and he does great outside, goes right away, but in between, he just goes when he feels the urge. We have caught him in the act tons of times, put him on a puppy pad, and waited until he goes, but this doesn't work either. He'll hold it on the puppy pad until has to go so bad that he's crying and every split second he gets off of it, he tries to pee on the carpet again. We have tried giving him treats the few times he uses the pad, and whenever he goes out. We have tried shaking a can full of pennies when he has accidents. We have tried flicking his bum, which I had to stop because I felt so bad. I am completely out of ideas. We are kind of clean freaks, and we are going through Nature's Miracle like mad and shampooing our carpet every other week. I'M LOSING MY MIND!! |

| ![]() I feel your pain, I really do. It honestly seems like they know what they are doing and he's peeing on the carpet just to spite you, doesn't it??? Well, he's not, but it sounds like he's confused on where he's supposed to go. My advice is to take him out more, not just 1.5 - 2 hours. Our little guy Samson was going out every half hour - 1 hour when he was that young. Sometimes even every half hour if he was playing a lot or drinking water. Don't give Rupert the chance to go on the carpet. Keep taking him outside quite often and reward him when he goes. If you take him out and he doesn't go, don't reward, but then place him in his crate for 10 - 15 minutes. Try again. Repeat until he goes and you reward him with either praise or a treat. Then allow him into his area to play for a while. Then take him out 1/2 hour - 1 hour later. I know it's hard and frustrating, but it will work and he will catch on. |

| ![]() I've had June for almost a week now and she used the pee pads great when she was in her pen, but then she just stopped using it and waited for us to let her out. Then she runs and does it on the floor. So... she took a nap yesterday afternoon and hadn't gone in about three hours, so when she woke up, I said that she has to potty before she can play. I put her on the pee pads on the balcony (not the one she normally uses) and made her stay there until she did her business. It was trying for a while, but after about half an hour (yes, I sat there for half an hour keeping her on the pad) she did her stuff. We rewarded with a nice treat. Last night, my sister took her to the pad before going to bed and she went right away. I took her this morning, but she was still sleepy, so she fell asleep on the pad. I just put her back in her pen. So, our new rule in the house is: She has to do her stuff before she is allowed to play and since she loves playing with Cash, it is working. Sorry for the long post, just wanted to tell you what is working for us.

| ![]() Thanks you guys for your help. A lady I work with suggested getting a diaper for him since he obviously has issues with going on himself. We got him a belly band since his #2 is much more predictable and we don't have problems so much with that. We keep it on him when he is in the house, only taking it off at night when he's in his crate or once we've gone outside to go potty. We went without the belly band today and we were accident free, so hopefully, we'll do this on and off to remind him. Thanks for your comments and help! I really appreciate it! |
