Holds it for hours in crate, but pees right in front of me! ...on the carpet!
Our Rupert is 4 months old. We have never been able to train him to use a puppy pad or to hold it while he's out and about in our home. Here's his situation:
Great in a crate. Stays in all night (or until we come get him, without any crying whatsoever). When we are at work, he is with Daphne, our 10 week old female, in our laundry room. There is a puppy pad in there with them. Daphne uses the pad, but Rupert prefers to hold it until we get home for lunch breaks. We never see accidents in the laundry room. (So we know he can hold it outside the crate)
When he is playing in the living room, which is the only other room he has access to in the house, he has no problem just peeing whenever he feels like it. We do take him out every 1.5-2 hours and he does great outside, goes right away, but in between, he just goes when he feels the urge. We have caught him in the act tons of times, put him on a puppy pad, and waited until he goes, but this doesn't work either. He'll hold it on the puppy pad until has to go so bad that he's crying and every split second he gets off of it, he tries to pee on the carpet again.
We have tried giving him treats the few times he uses the pad, and whenever he goes out. We have tried shaking a can full of pennies when he has accidents. We have tried flicking his bum, which I had to stop because I felt so bad. I am completely out of ideas. We are kind of clean freaks, and we are going through Nature's Miracle like mad and shampooing our carpet every other week.
