| Exercise Pen vs. Room w/ Baby Gates I am wondering what most of you prefer for puppies or dogs who don't have full run of the house? Bailey is currently gated into the whole kitchen/nook, which is quite a large area. Even with all that room she often seems like she wants out, but to me it's too much room because she has accidents in different parts of the room. I was thinking I should get some larger gates so I can block her off at the island, which would also remove the chance of her picking up dangerous foods dropped while cooking (and allow my cat to get by into the living room, which she currently can't). But maybe I should confine her even more and just get an exercise pen? I would love to get one with a bottom to it so I can put her in the living room when I'm in there and she can't go on the carpet. I was just curious how many on here use each method and why you prefer it.

| x-pens x-pens can be used on the carpet with the use of piddle pads. I use the washable ones that I get from www.personallypaws.com. They are leak proof and puppies can't tear them up like they do the disposable ones. |

| We took the measurements of the X-pen (4X4) and cut a piece of plywood the right size, then I went to the flooring store and asked them for a remnant of vinyl flooring the size of 4X4. Cost me 10 bucks. that way we can put the X-pen on the carpet and use pee pads on top of that. It worked great when he was a puppy and now at 1 yr. We leave the door to the X-pen open and he goes in there to pee. Good luck.

| We use an ex-pen too - with a piece of vinyl underneath it. I think the 4x4 is the perfect size. Big enough for a pee pad, crate and a little room to walk around and small enough that they will teach themselves not to soil in it as they get older. When Bailey turned 1 year, we doubled the ex-pen and now she has an 8 x 8 area. We keep Bailey's expen in the basement. Its a walk out with huge picture windows that go down to the floor - so she can watch the birds & squirrels during the day and sunbathe, too!!

| LOVE the x-pen!!! I use a x pen when I am at work for Cooper and Oliver. I am gone for 3-4 hrs. a day and they don't potty on the floor. I do have concrete floors and they love it. It is cool in the summer and warm in the winter. My dogs are potty trained to go outside as well. After about a month of training,I say dogs in and they go right in and when I get home, no accidents and they LOVE going in it. I think it gives them a sense of security since my house is kinda big and long. Thumbs up for the x-pen! It is a life saver for time away from home or even for traveling with my little guys. |

| We have a large soft sided exercise pen for indoors though my girls no longer use it anymore. When they were babies it was great, still sometimes use it for going visiting or too the beach as it is lightweight and folds easily for the trunk. |

Did your lil guys have a problem with the ex pen when you first introduced it to them?? My little one hates being in there but likes being in his crate!...I am nervous because my ex pen is the wired kind big enough that he can fit his hands and a bit of his mouth in and I don't want him to get hurt when I'm gone but I think it's better than confining him to just his crate! Any suggestions??

I started them in the ex pen when they were 5 months old ( I got them in the summer so I can focus on them and potty training) I have two ex pens. One is shorter then the other but they both don't have any problems in any of them. Their paws do fit between the bars but the slip right out. I put them both pens together if I am gone longer then a few hours so they have room to play. I'm sorry to say this and it was super hard for me but tough love is the only way to go. I put them in it everytime I left the house (like to go outside for a min etc. and then worked up to my work schedule. Yorkies are super smart. But you have to be consistant. I use the command dogs in and they jump right in and get comfy in their beds. (Also, don't forget to put their food and water in with them) I hope that helps a little, let me know if there is anything else I can help you with. Good luck!!! BTW: I keep the pen up all week in my family room where they stay (for convenience) and also because they like to go in it on their own.Maybe you should try leaving it up so your little one can go in when ever. Just a thought
