I actually tried to crate them first and they hated it and at night I didn't get any sleep.

I started them in the ex pen when they were 5 months old ( I got them in the summer so I can focus on them and potty training)

I have two ex pens. One is shorter then the other but they both don't have any problems in any of them. Their paws do fit between the bars but the slip right out. I put them both pens together if I am gone longer then a few hours so they have room to play.

I'm sorry to say this and it was super hard for me but tough love is the only way to go. I put them in it everytime I left the house (like to go outside for a min etc. and then worked up to my work schedule. Yorkies are super smart. But you have to be consistant. I use the command dogs in and they jump right in and get comfy in their beds. (Also, don't forget to put their food and water in with them)

I hope that helps a little, let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.
Good luck!!!

BTW: I keep the pen up all week in my family room where they stay (for convenience) and also because they like to go in it on their own.Maybe you should try leaving it up so your little one can go in when ever. Just a thought
