We use an ex-pen too - with a piece of vinyl underneath it. I think the 4x4 is the perfect size. Big enough for a pee pad, crate and a little room to walk around and small enough that they will teach themselves not to soil in it as they get older.

When Bailey turned 1 year, we doubled the ex-pen and now she has an 8 x 8 area. We keep Bailey's expen in the basement. Its a walk out with huge picture windows that go down to the floor - so she can watch the birds & squirrels during the day and sunbathe, too!!
