| Barking at Strangers. I'm sure there are other threads out there like this, but I'd thought I'd start my own. Baxter has this habit of barking at people when we are outside. I live in an apartment complex, and when I take him outside, we are near the main road. People walk along the sidewalks all the time, and every time he sees somebody he will start barking and try to run at them. (He is on a harness and leash.) I pull him back, say no, and (try to) make him sit. Usually he'll bark for a minute, then stop and return to finding a place to pee/poop. I'm wondering if I'm doing the right thing by holding him back, saying "NO" firmly, and making him sit by my legs. He has gotten a LITTLE better about it, but sometimes I have to take him back inside, because he won't stop. It's really embarrassing sometimes!! Any advice?

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Joey does this too, he goes through periods where he's better, and then he gets worse. I've found he's better the more frequently we take walks, and redirecting him seems to work best at alleviating the barking. The other day, he was fine, didn't bark at anyone, then he saw a girl on a skateboard whizzing by, and he barked at her and everyone he saw after that. Redirecting works by just making them look in a different directing, turning them and turning them, until they forget about the person, they were barking at. I've also found that carrying him out the front door and setting him down outside, helps with his excitement level, and the walk is calmer, with less barking.

| I am reading the puppy whisperer ( highly recommend it) , when they bark at strangers, it says to try to approach the strangers, let your doggie greet them and say hello, dont make it a big deal, offer the stranger a treat to give to your pup and then ask them to pet her, after a few times doing this , your puppy will stop and think of people who walk by as a good thing, Its worked out great for us. In fact I have a treat bag by my front door now, I ask that when someone new comes it, they wait for me to tell her to sit and they can then give her a treat and pet her but ONLY when she sits... this way later in life she is not jumping or barking at guests...I love this book! |
