| Training with Hand Signals Has anyone trained their Yorkie with hand signals? We have been working with Gracie to know both in the event that she goes deaf/blind as she ages but have found that there isn't really a lot of information on it. We have even had to train with random signals because we couldn't find a universal one. |

| Layla knows both hand signals and voice commands- i usually use them together however, lately i have started using JUST the hand signals. for sit i put my hand in a fist and just bend my hand at the wrist. Down- i put my hand flat and keep it horozontal while lowering it towards the ground. Stay is a hand in front of her face wait is a small "wave" like a semi-circle with my palm facing outwards- wait means- I use wait if i am going to go through a door before her or something- stay is if i am leaving and going to come back. We JUST started come with a hand signal today- i start with my arm fully extended and down and bend my arm at my elbow and bring it up to my shoulder. If i am going to "release" Layla from stay- i point to the ground- usulaly to her food dish because she has to sit and wait for that. I hope this helps. I too think it is VERY important to have a hand signal- in everything i've read dogs respond better to a body command than a voice command. |

I wish I had read this; I had to make up my own. I used words, but I found that he really was attentive to the slightest movement of my hands; I swear I think he could learn sign language, and he notices a subtle change in my hand. So yes, get your signals down right and combine them with the words for fastest learning.

| I have a yorkie that even with catarcts response to hand signals and it does not matter what you use at all unless you want others to work her and they use the standard hand signals. Dogs do work better with body commands and tend to watch your body anyway for what you want them to do.. you are most likely repeating yourself with your body language already when you are using words now. It is how they seem to know beofre you say it what you want them to do.. they read your movments first. JL

| I use hand and voice commands (pretty much like Layla is learning). It is going really well! I would recommend doing a combination of both of them.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I couldn't always remember how to do the signal, and that why it's better to have a clear idea before you start teaching because he learned them faster than me. Like my "spin" and "turn over" signal are very similar, and if I didn't do them the right way, he actually responded correctly even though the words didn't match, he followed my bad hand signals.
