| my yorkie is very unsociable Hi I'm new here, I have a yorkie he is 3 years old and called Jai. To start he was my nan's dog she had him from 5 weeks old she kept him at home and very rarely walked him. Me and my boyfriend now have custody of him and had him about 6 months as she can no longer look after him i walk him everyday at least twice but ..... Walking him is a nightmare if he sees other dogs he snaps and growls at them and he wont let anyone stroke him, He has to be restrained at the vets just to have his jabs thats not all if my friends come to my home he goes for them and sits and growls and snarls at them all the time, He is so friendly with me, my boyfriend and our families his like a different dog with them What can i do to train him and make him more friendly Any ideas or advice would be highly appreciated Thanks Nikki |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | If I understand you correctly, your nan got the dog at 5 weeks; the minimum age that a Yorkie should leave the mother is 12 weeks. Some people think just because a mother dog stops nursing that the puppies can be taken away, this is just not true and important socialization skills are taught be the mother and littermates. Your puppy has never received the socialization it needed from the mother, and probably didn't receive what it needed from your nan, so it will probably be very difficult to socialize it now. You need more advice than I can give you, and it's important when retraining to do everything absolutely correct, or you can make the problem worse. Have you considered a dog trainer? Petsmart offers training on a one to one basis, as well as classes, maybe you could talk to someone there and see if they have a program that could help you. Cesar, the Dog Whisperer, has a TV show, and he has addressed this issue several times, perhaps you could rent his series if you don't get his program.

| Thanks, I was worried that was going to be the problem, I have seen the dog whisperer on TV and he does give some good advice, I think i might need to talk to my vet i'm just worried that there is nothing I can do for him. He is a pedigree he was released early due to the fact the mother had 12 pups and they were tearing her open so the mature ones were given away so she could feed the smaller ones. |

| Nancy is right ... It sounds like your dog is taking on the protector role There are two thing syou are going to have to correct here First and most important is his socialization issues with people Have people come into your house let him come to them and treat him as he becomes friendly bring him out to social areas where there are people also so he becomes habitualized The other is the snapping at other dogs There are great episodes on It's Me or the Dog Victoria Stillwell is great at this just google the show she does this training with her clients often so it will be easy to see
