Potty Training Problems solved.

I have given up in the last month feeling like my poor baby will never get it. And I will just have to deal with a life of cleaning up after her. Please can anyone give me some tips or tell me what I'm doing wrong. Because I dont want to give up on my baby

Hi Zoes_Mommy, wow I truly understand your pain here. I went through the same thing when it comes to potty training my baby-girl yorkie. I did not potty train Shelldenae’ to go outside. She is strictly and indoor girl unless otherwise. She only uses her potty pads unless we are out of the house on walks or over other family members house but then I have a doggie bag with everything I need…training pads, food, water, etc. She would only bowl if we go for long walks and always urinate when we get home from our walks or out for the days (but like a said I have a doggie bag with me on those times).

I love using Ouch training pads or Hartz training pads (I am sure there are a lot of other brands out there). I started by watching her like a hound after each meals. I learned from a book I read to give her meals then timed her how long it takes to use the bathroom. Once I got that down I started to move her to the training pad area (which is one spot only…for me it was easier to use one area until she got it down. This didn’t happen right away trust me but soon after she started to use it by herself as long the pads are there. I also, purchased the “Out! Stain & Odor Remover one for carpets and one for tiles” This helped as well because once I sprayed it she did go back and used the same area I call them mistakes (which they are considering she is being trained).

She would sniff around first which indicates to me that she wanted to use the bathroom. The training pad has a scent on them which helps as well and guides her to use the bathroom on it. Also, I don’t free feed her either. I use to feed her certain times a day give her 15-20 minutes to eat then move the food and water away. Some may say this is cruel but a lot of trainers and books I read stated its okay as well. It’s truly up to each owner how to feed and the like…I believe no owner is wrong unless you’re starving you little one which I am sure you won’t…by feeding her certain times a day it also helped me to be prepared on when she needed to use the bathroom as well. I purchased Shelldenae’ at four months and fed her three times a day but now she is a year old she feeds twice a day and I still give her 15-20 to eat and move her food and water. I have no health issues with her and she is fine. This is what I have done with my baby girl yokie…I know its hard but try not to give up which I know you will not. Good luck!

Thank you! I have tried the wee-pads a few times...I purchased the Petco brand just because I didnt know there was a difference. Maybe the scent on them isn't strong enough because all she's ever tried to do is tear them up. I'm going to try the ones you mentioned. I have considered litter box training and spraying it with one of those "go here" sprays. I just want to find something that will work and is not too difficult for my Mom because she is with her from 8:30-6:30 Mon-Fri. This is my first pup, My Mom has trained dogs before but it has never been this difficult. Thanks again all the advice and well wishes are very much appreciated.

I have a nearly 7 month old yorkie, and his potty training seems to be getting worse, i still put a pad down, which he uses most of the time, but when we are at home, he could be stood right behind me and he will pee on the floor, and then runs off because he knows he has done wrong, he has the run of a big garden but can still pee in the house. can anyone advise any help.

Jantheman, what method are you using to train your pup. Are you trying to train him to use the bathroom in the house or outside?

There are several methods, you have to pick one that matches your schedule and life style. Then stick with it.

I would suggest going to your local library, or bookstore and there should be several book titles that will be on the subject of house training your dog. I would get one that was published in the last 5 years.

I would thumb through those and find the one that appeals to you and take it home and follow through exactly on the method you pick and give your pup a long time and lots of forgiveness to learn.

I will say that most books,( on house training for dogs) back in the '70s, chose to tell folks to train the puppies to paper. Now days most of the books will list several methods, but paper has fallen out of favor as most dogs, once trained to paper, have a hard time re-learning to go outside. I had a miniature poodle as a child and followed the paper method. He never learned to pee outside at night and always peed on the same spot the paper used to be on. He lived to be 16 years old. He was smart about everything else, but house training only worked for pooping outside and I belive our old dauchsund taught him that

Can someone tell me if this is a reasonable schedule for my 12 week old babe? I want to make sure she is getting enough play time and crate time to understand potty training.

715am out for bathroom
730am eat
8am out for bathroom
830am in crate
12pm out for bathroom
1230pm back in crate
230-3pm-ish eat/out to pee and play/go for walk until about 4
4pm out to pee
415pm in crate while mommy hits the gym
515pm out for bathroom/play time
6pm dinner
615-630 out for bathroom
630-730pm play
730pm pee and in crate while I shower/eat dinner.
830-1030 out to pee/play/etc
1030pm bedtime

I need help. I have a 2 year old male. I purchased a female who is now 5 months old. I have her in a crate. She is allowed to be out and play while we can supervise her. She is on a set schedule for feeding and going out. She regularly holds her potty 8 or more hours if she is in the crate or leashed to me. She refuses to potty outside to the point that she will sit at the door and cry to come in so she can potty. She does not sniff around. She just pees. I have read books, taken her to vet, ordered videos, everything I can think of. The really bad part is my male is taking it upon himself to try and mark over her scent all over the house. I clean with enzyme cleaner. Had the carpet professionally cleaned for pet urine odors. At this point , I really need new carpet. I am at a loss. He was trained before her. I love her, but just wonder if I need to cut my losses and sale her. Please give me some ideas to try and get her trained and my little man back on track.

hi, i appreciate the info on the type of pee pads. the problem i am having is when i put my yorkie puppy on her pee pad when she starts to sniff she just will sit on it and look at me, try to play or run away. i say go potty when i put her on it everytime. i can get her to poop on it because i can get her on it just as she is ready and she will cont to go. as far as peeing hard to even tell when she is going to pee sometimes. she will be mid playing and squat. any advice. thanks jacklynn38

ok let me try this again...in reference to pee pad training i read the post about ouch or hartz training pads which i am now going to buy. however my little girl is now 9 weeks old but i started the pee pad training at 8 weeks when i got her. when i put her on there when she starts to sniff she will either run off and pee a few minutes later or sometimes even an hour later. sometimes she looks at me and wants to play. which everytime i put her on it i say go potty. when she goes to poopy i can always tell she is going to poop and i pick her up and put her on it and she does go. any suggestions. i have sat for hours, putting her on pee pad everytime she starts to sniff but no success. any one have any suggestions? thanks jacklynn38

I have two male yorkies and they are 1 years old now. They are still being very weird about the potty training. They are brothers and they are inseparable so they will not do anything without the other. One of the yorkies is mine and the other yorkie was my girlfriends. So I would try to crate train them and use the washable potty pads for accidents when they are in the playpen. But my girlfriend was training them different while I was in class and they were so confused. Now that my me and my girlfriend are not together, I have both of them to take care of and I have to start from scratch. They had free roam in their playpen and because of that, they were using it as a tinkle box. I just want to know if anyone is trying to potty train two dogs at the same time, and if they have any tips to help me through this process. I love my dog very much, but he is a lot to deal with sometimes than his little brother who was the runt of the litter. Any help would be great because I love them both and I dont want to separate them. :-(

Usher is now just over 2 years old and has done well with potty indoors since I brought him home at 3 months. I use his crate with potty pads and a washable potty pad outside to catch the little footprints. He has just in the last month started to pee in the cage on the pad, but poop on the washable pad. If the washable pad is not there he will poop on the carpet which would be the next step when the washable pad is not available. I have noticed when he is outside he will pee on one side of the lawn but only poop on the other. If I catch him pooping on either the rug or the washable pad and say no and put him in the cage, we will hold his poop. Any suggestions?

What do you do if your dog is six years old and has been potty trained but all of a sudden quits going on her pee pad and decides to use the rug. Before now she used her pee pad regularly or went outside but now goes on the rug. What do I do?

I joined this website because I am at wits end! Our 8 month old, Macie, is the love of our lives. She was going both poo and pee on her pads for almost 5 months. Very seldom having accidents. And yes, we praised her and gave her a small treat every time. However, for the past few weeks, she has gone nuts! She is pooping and peeing everywhere in our house. This includes our bed, the couch, any and all floors and carpets. We can be standing right beside her and she just goes. And she knows she is being bad. Paleeeeze help!
