| Anyone with experience training a deaf puppy? Hello everyone. I just joined this list yesterday - and I have to tell you all, I am thrilled to have found it. I am wondering if anyone has any experience in training a deaf puppy. Her name is Coco and we also have her brother Winston (we actually were only getting Winston, but when we found out that Coco was deaf, we took her too so she could stay with her brother). I am just looking for whatever advise I can get to help in training Coco. Thank you in advance for your help. Oh, forgot to mention that they are 15 weeks old today -- happy 15 week birthday babies!! |

Hi and welcome to YT. First what a wonderful thing you did in bringing Coco into your world along with her brother. I don't have experince with deaf puppies but I do clicker training and hand signals with Izzy. She does respond to the hand signals so you might try to Google that and see what comes up. I would train like a hearing dog..with her favorite treat that is only used for training.

| DITTO!!!! Good for you for doing such a nice thing! When I worked at the vets we had a basset hound named emily, whom had to get both of her eyes removed. she was real young and really recovered well. she is able to see through her parents telling her where to go..you would say left, she goes left, right, right, up, up, down, down! it was pretty neat! So i know it can be done! Good Luck!!!!

| You can clicker train a deaf dog using a flash light and the use of hand signs. I suggest you google search and see if there is a death dog ground like there is a blind dog group on line to help you. You will have to make sure she knows to look at you to get her instructions. JL

| Deaf Puppy Our Baby Mia is Deaf and I have been working with her. She is 5 1/2 months old. I teach her with sign language. You have to be patient. It takes time but I wouldn't trade her for anything. I also purchased the book Living with a Deaf Dog by Susan Cope Becker which has helped. I got it on ebay. Mia, comes, sits and stays in sign language. I try to work with her when ZsaZsa and Zoe have gone to bed and its just she and I. Just because they are deaf does not mean they are dumb and your Coco will learn. If I can help let me know. |

| My daughter has a deaf Great Dane and she uses hand signals. But she also taught her with the help of her other dogs. She would speak and sign what she wanted and the other dogs would do it so Tantra would see and she would follow along. She is the best dog and does what she is told. Of course you have to get her attention first. Good Luck and Congrats!!

| I just wanted to say Hi, and Welcome to Yorkie Talk. Congratulations on your 2 new babies... I would consentrate on using hand signals and treats as rewards. When I worked for the vets we had alot of deaf dos. Getting and keeping theor attention was the hardest thing @ first. After that they did really well. Best wishes to you all, Can't wait to see pics of your babies.....
