| Housebreaking a Yorkie Hi I have an 7 month old Yorkie, Dahlia. She will not give me any notice when she needs to go out. I usually have to guess and even then it sometimes to late. She has peed in her bed, her crate, on the floor. I have another Yorkie, Lily, who is 17 months old and she is housebroken. I was hoping Dahlia would follow Lily's lead....but she does not. I give her praise and a treat when she goes outside. How can I get her to give me a sign that she has to go? I would apprecitate any help. Thanks! |

| I will be of little help, I'm in the same boat with Gracie Ruth. Boo loves to go outside and as soon as he hears me he'll run up to me and then run to the back door, then run back to me, etc until I make it to the door to let them out. Gracie has learned the meaning of the word and what to do from him, but only recently is starting to put 2 & 2 together, that outside equals pottying not just going out to play and terrorize Boo. Gracie is 9 months old now and lately, she has been sort of, kind of looking in my general direction when she wants to go out. I've been diligent in watching her and am starting to see her posture change when she starts to think of going outside. I'll ask her and you can see the light bulb go on, "Outside? Yeah, that's it, that's what I want. Outside! Momma you are brilliant!" Ok, so I added that last part, she doesn't really say that. My only suggestion would be to take the treat outside and give it to her immediately after she potties. Don't wait until you come back in to give her the treat because then she thinks the treat is for coming in, not for pottying outside.

If the crate is big enough for your baby to do something, and then simply walk away from it do lay down, you need to make her space small enough that she can do a full turn and lay down. If i were a pup and did something, i know i wouldnt want to lay in it! so that may help you!!!! and i'm sure the other yorkie will teach her! I just posted another thread about this, check it out!!! GOOD LUCK!!!!

| First, are you crate training your new puppy!? Many people think crate training is harsh, but, I live for it! I think its a great thing! As far as potty training goes, as soon as you take her out of the crate in the am, first thing is to take her outside. When she is out there, and going to the bathroom, you can come up with a command word. Make sure that EVERYONE in your household is using the same word, and be CONSISTANT! When Fiona would start to urinate i would say in a high pitched toned voice " Good PEE PEE, good girl? and then really let her know she did the right thing. You only wanna say the word when they are in the act of doing it, not before, not after<~~~~ that is key! And when she would deficate I would say " Good poopy, good girl" I have her basically on command now, so it makes potty time outside, go faster! She only had 2 accidents on TILED floor when I first got her. They say that yorkies are really hard to potty train, but I don't agree, since Fiona did such a great time doing so! Just be patient, consistant, and really reward her!

| I have trained many breeds of dogs, we can't seem to be without a pack around here! But I've had the worst time with potty training when it comes to Samson and Ezekiel! I train to go outside only. Samson is 1 now and Zeke is 7 months. Samson is still trying to train me! Zeke too. I'll be thinking of you.

| I'm in agreement with TheresaM. Take the treat outside so when she goes she is rewarded. Give Dahlia a lot of praise when she does the right thing. Rewarding them is such an important part of them doing well. |

| I am working on my almost 9 month girl who i got about 2 months ago while my boy is pretty much housetrained. I had him at 9 weeks and he was easy to train and rings the bell to go out. I have to guess with her and watch her constantly.

| When I first bought Grace I kept her crated. She would whimper when she would wake up and I would immediately take her to her wee wee pad (it was in front of her crate) and she would go. I did it every time she woke up. Then when she was a bit older I moved the wee wee pad to our bathroom and Grace would get out the crate and go straight to the bathroom. I was consistant with it and she picked up very quickly. The harder transition was getting her to go outside because she was used to going in the bathroom. But she caught on quickly and enjoys her walks outside. I think dogs really love walks with their master. |

| All the tips so far are spot on! One I have is get a Tell Bell. It is the best thing I did as far as housebreaking Lucky is concerned. He is 16 weeks and rings the bell EVERY time he wants to go out. Actually, my brother's 2 year old beagle will lay with the bell between her paws, but refuse to ring it. She stares at him until he rings it for her!! He still attempts to potty, even when he rings it for her because he has been taught to go when we say, "Go potty." |

| Potty Training I just wanted to say how very informative this thread has been. I now have 4 babies, tho only one is actually a puppy (8 mt). My first baby will be two in Jan & we had him almost completely housebroken thanks to my now deceased min schnauzer. She used her doggy dog until she got too ill. Parker would see her & want to be with her & bless her heart, she put up with a bouncy puppy at 14yrs old. Shortly after her death, I was given Price (8mt) by my cousin. Price has been impossible to completely housebreak as he is deaf. Last month I inherited two of my great aunts girls. They were supposedly housebroke & preggers. Well, partial true, they are preggers , (thanks, Parker). Now I am trying to break allllllll of them at the same time. I messed up from the beginning. They had run of the house. Needless to say carpets have been shampooed & they have now a new room (It adjoins the kitchen w/a babygate) that they stay in when not outside or in with us under constant supervision. I was just looking at training programs when I saw this thread. I hve been putting piddle pads down & they have greatly improved on using them. They go out at 6:30am, my dh lets them out & then returns them to their room until I get up & then it's the same routine w/exception of bad weather days. Has anyone tried to break several at the same time? Sorry so long, Thanks, Sheila |
