| Inside & Outside Potty Training Hello Everyone! I have a precious little girl that is 12 weeks old that I have had for almost a week now. I have been taking her outside to go potty, but am unsure what to do about her during the day while I am at work. I bought a very large kennel crate(for big dogs) took the tray out and put the crate on the grass so she could stay outside & safe during the day while I am at work and still be able to go potty on the grass. I was planning on putting her small kennel in there so she would still have her den to go to. Of course today it is a downpour so I couldn't leave her. I am now wondering if I should keep her in the utility room with puppy pads while I am at work? Is it confusing for them to go on the pads during the day and outside in the evenings and weekends?? Ideally I would like for her to always go outside but I am now seeing that the puppy pads might have to be option during the day. Help?? |

| I really would not leave her outside. Too many reasons to list. I would keep her inside and use puppy pads. You should try to walk her just before leaving and as soon as you get home. If you can, do so at lunch too. If you cannot, then maybe you can have someone do that for you. I think that she will evenutally learn that she should be pottying outside. Good luck.

| when i first gotten my puppy it was during the winter so we trained him to go on the pee pee pads. he was getting use to it until he started teething. after he started to chew the pads and everything he can get his mouth at. we couldn't crate him because we work all day and since he was a puppy, he couldn't hold it long. we sacrifice our floors. this went on for months and then finally spring. we retrained him to go potty outside and he's fine. we made a lil tent outside so that he can go potty when it rains. i am hoping this winter, he'll still go potty even when it's cold. you can try to do the pads. i have friends who train their dogs on it and it's fine. it's just Okie. He loves to put everything in his mouth so we can never use the pad. |

♥ love my girls!! ♥ Donating Member | My little girl is potty pad trained, but the way I understand it, most everyone starts out doing pads since babies aren't supposed to go outside really (especially front yards or anywhere dogs have been) until 3 weeks after their last puppy shots. And, since she isn't 4 mo old yet, and doesn't have the muscle control to hold it for 8 hours, the utility room is a great idea (I'm assuming it's an easy-to-clean floor). They say to line the entire floor with newspaper (or pads) making a den area at one end for sleeping/eating/drinking. Also, only praise her for going where you eventually want her to go. So, if you take her into your backyard, then praise her when she goes there, but just ignore that she used the papers in the utility room if you see her in the act. That's the main thing that confuses them---praising them for going in the house when you want them to go outside. Just make sure to keep her papers clean in your utility room. If your utility room is really large, you can partition it off making it smaller, or even use your big kennel/little kennel technique in there. (The little kennel as her den is a great idea, and she'll be well on her way when you start crate training if you're going to do that!!) |

| Today is my first day away from my little one since I got her last week. I brought the big crate in and put it in our kitchen. I put her bed, toys, and a puppy pad in there. I went home for lunch, about 3.5 hrs after I had left her this morning, and she had not went potty in it at all. Yeah!!!! I took her outside and she went then. I was so excited, hopefully I can keep going home at lunch to take her out, then my son can take her out when he gets home from school. That will put her getting let out every 4 hours or so. Is that enough? I felt so bad when I had to leave her at lunch, she was whining & barking so I turned the t.v. on for her so she would have a little noise. Anyone else do that?? |

| Pippin was outside trained by the time he was about 3 months old.. maybe 3 1/2 or 4, I can't really remember, it was like a year ago. When we would leave we'd baby gate him in an area with his food, water, bed and toys. We also put a couple of puppy pads down and he'd go on them if he needed to pee, sometimes he'd hold it until we got home. We were never gone longer the 4 hours and he did just fine. Good luck with your little one.. -Kelly Last edited by pippinsmommy; 09-03-2008 at 12:16 PM. |
