| All was well and then this.... Our yorkie was going all night every night without any accidents. he would cry or bark if he had to go potty outside. A few days ago we switched his food and he had diarrhea. Now for the past 5 nights he has pooped in his cage at night. He has also had three accidents in it during the day. Do you think it is because he has diarrhea and can't let us know in time, or is he getting in the habit now of going in his crate? how do we stop this? |

| Yeah if he was holding it before and now he's not, it's probably because he can't hold it. Loki learned *very* early not to poop in the house or in his crate, months before he stopped having pee accidents (although we found out that was medical, but still) anyway, he had diarrhea a lot as a puppy and those were the only times he would have accidents in his crate or in the house. I'm so proud of him now he even tells us when he has to go out if he's sick... but not as a puppy. Can you try fasting him or feeding rice and chicken? What food did you go from and to? Did you change it slowly? Have you been to the vet? A couple times when i thought Loki's diarrhea was food related it was giardia (who knows how, he's not one to sniff or lick strange things outside) and then it messed up his system forever. We thought he was "allergic" to things but really once he got a little older and his stomach got stronger he could eat anything. Cheese made him sick as a pup and now he can have it no problem. That kind of thing. I hope you figure it out! (Oh also - if he's going in the middle of the night you can change his feeding schedule and it should change when he needs to go. Different foods may move through his system differently, you never know.)

| Do you think that is it? He started with the diarrhea when we tried the new food. He had royal canin sensible choice and we mixed in Wellness. He has dry heaved a few times. He is eating still but he has had light colored stool now for about 4 days sometimes it's diahrrea. |

| yorkies have very delicate digestive systems Quote:
you should not switch food suddenly and if you are trying to move from one food to another for some particular reason, then you have to do it very, very gradually - like mix 1/4 new food with 3/4 old food and feed that mix for a week or two while watching his stools to see if he adjusts. if not then scale back on the mix and go slower. if he doesn't adjust then back off and try something different if you must get off his old food for some reason. Both the breeder and the vet told us this. I have not deviated from what the breeder started our pup on - eukanuba small dog kibble with a small amount dick van patten's natural balance loaf chopped up and mixed in with the kibble... even when going from puppy kibble to adult small dog kibble I did the gradual mix adjustment process I described above. The one time I had to give him a different food suddenly was after dental work, I gave him soft food and he immediately had loose poop. The next time I needed to give him soft food I microwaved the kibble with some water, let it cool and then served the slop - and his stool was fine. | |
