you should not switch food suddenly and if you are trying to move from one food to another for some particular reason, then you have to do it very, very gradually - like mix 1/4 new food with 3/4 old food and feed that mix for a week or two while watching his stools to see if he adjusts. if not then scale back on the mix and go slower. if he doesn't adjust then back off and try something different if you must get off his old food for some reason. Both the breeder and the vet told us this.

I have not deviated from what the breeder started our pup on - eukanuba small dog kibble with a small amount dick van patten's natural balance loaf chopped up and mixed in with the kibble... even when going from puppy kibble to adult small dog kibble I did the gradual mix adjustment process I described above. The one time I had to give him a different food suddenly was after dental work, I gave him soft food and he immediately had loose poop. The next time I needed to give him soft food I microwaved the kibble with some water, let it cool and then served the slop - and his stool was fine.
