| crate training schedule hi all - i'm fairly new to this site but i have a 17 week old yorkie puppy named elvis. he is a handful and we are currently crate training him so he learns to use the bathrooom outside. he has not had an accident in over a week and i'm so proud b/c we are finally learning his "cues" when he needs to go to the restroom!!! anyway, my question is both my husband and i work full time (8 to 5). we come home for lunch to let him run around, feed him, and use the restroom. i walk him in the morning and sometimes at night too and after work, i try to let him be outside of the crate as much as possible (unless i can't closely supervise him). he sleeps in his crate at night too. for those who work during the day, do you keep them on the same crate schedule on the weekends? we have been crating him some on the weekends, i feel like he spends too much time in the crate already, but if he is out all the time he gets into so much trouble and wants to get into everything around the den area we keep him in. any thoughts? |

| I'm kind of in the same situation you're in. My hubby lets Lily out on his lunch break and I get home at about 4 or 4:30 and let her out again (I'm a teacher). On the weekends, we've been letting her stay out all day. I'm thinking though, that we're going to start putting her crate in the living room on the weekends so that when she gets tired during the day she'll get in to take a nap but still be around us. Maybe that'll start to help her see her crate as a place of comfort and rest--and gives her the opportunity to "choose" to go in it. Good luck!

| perhaps on the weekends you could set up an x-pen for him to play in or put a baby gate across one are of your rooms. That way Elvis has some room to romp and shake his stuff -- I gate mine in the kitchen when I'm gone and if they were just puppies still they would probably spend more time there. Welcome to YT!

| Its good to know Its good to know others in the same situation. We are new to the site, we have a 8 week old named Oso, we just received him 5 days ago, and we have started crate training. We only use the crate at night for bed and we are gone during the day. Hubby is home during the day, so it makes it a little easier. I take over at night with the training - Oso sleeps from 9:45 pm to 6:00 am in the crate, then the house is his again. - So he is out a lot during the day, takes naps where he falls, but when the hubby leaves on errands he goes in the crate. This is a great site! |

| I crate train Jamie too. Same weekday schedule... 8-5 come home at lunch to let him out. On the weekend though Jamie only goes in the crate if we're not home. I've found the more that he's out, the less trouble he gets into over the long run... probably cause he's already gotten into everything and gotten in trouble At first he was just pushing his boundaries to see what he could and could not get away with. On the weekends I take him out to potty regularly (every hour to hour and a half) just in case. If he doesn't potty he goes in his crate for 15 minutes and then I take him back outside. Now he knows that as soon as his feet hit the grass its potty time and then he gets to play. Sounds like you're doing a GREAT job mommy!
