| We need help and suggestions! Okay Everyone..I have this little barking issues with Tumi and Gracie. Every time they hear someone by the door or the hall way of our apt, they go nuts and bark like crazy..sometimes for 5 or 10 mins. We tried spray water bottle and tried to stop them but it is not working. I know it prob. goes on when we are not home also every time they hear foot steps. We just got an anonymous letter saying that the neighbors are afraid of passing by our unit late night or early morning fearing they might disturb the whole building. We don't know what to do. Hubby and I are thinking about Ultra Sonic bark silencers. We don't think the collars are gonna work since my girls are way tooo small..please help!!

| Have you ever tried the can full of pennies? Might work. Really, you need something to scare them into not barking anymore. Our pups did this incessantly, but the waterguns worked for us. Now if we even point a hand at them when they bark they stop because they hate to be wet. Think of something they really hate and associate barking at the door with that. That's the best advice I can give, but I understand how you feel and hope it gets better!

| This is a long one…sorry! Zeus responds very well to the Dog Whisperer type of training. We had a problem similar to yours where Zeus would sit on the back of the couch, look out the window like a big tough guy and bark at any individual who dare pass "his castle"! I read as much as I could on his sudden behavior change and dealt with what I thought the root of the problem was...his anxiety and fear as my first step. I had to remain very calm and try to view the barking as a cry for help and not an annoyance. Keeping my energy positive, not raising my voice, and being in control were all very important in order for Zeus to be able to feel like he didn't need to protect me or be so anxious. Here is what worked for us: ~I sat with him at the window and when I would see him tense up or start to focus on someone outside I would make a quick "tsss" sound while I touched him on the side of the neck lightly with my finger to redirect his attention. In what I read they said that when you yell at dogs and use a lot of words they view you as unstable and become more anxious and fell unsafe...so it’s really important to say as few words as possible. ~At first my corrections would only break his stare briefly and then he would start to bark or growl again seconds later. I made sure to say "good boy" every time he didn't start barking again. Each time he made a peep I would correct him again. He finally decided that the window was not so fun anymore and it was time for a nap. ~A couple hours later we went back to the window and this time after I corrected him he would stay silent for a few minutes instead of seconds. At this point I added in a bit more positive reinforcement and started to really emphasis my happy emotions when I said "good boy"..."that’s a really good boy" etc... ~For a few days I kept the window shade closed when I wasn't home and there to correct him so that he couldn't undo our hard work. I also would leave the radio on a very low volume so that he would feel like somebody was home watching him. It might be effective if you put a low jazz station on the radio and positioned it somewhere by the door they are guarding…it may help to distract them when your not home. ~ It only took a few days to see a huge difference...I would say 80% less barking after 3 days but it took a couple weeks to totally break the habit. Now we have no more barking and I can leave the shade up again. He still sits and looks out the window but he is calm, cool, and collected....unless of coarse the big bad UPS guy comes up the driveway...he really dislikes him for some reason...but if he barks I just make the "tsss" or "eehh" sound and he stops immediately and doesn't make another peep. I am in no way a trainer or behavior specialist…but I wanted to share what worked for us. Hope it helps and if you are interested I found both of Cesar Milan’s books very helpful in understanding Zeus better. I think there are even training DVD’s now too but I haven’t looked at any of those. If I can be of any help feel free to PM me and we can either exchange phone numbers or talk though email…Good Luck…hope this helps. ~Cara

| I watch "It's Me or the Dog" a lot and when there's a dog barking at the front door she lets them bark 3 times and then claps to get their attention and says Thank You is a firm voice. You could try this or watching her show. A lot of dogs bark at the door like this. She's always correcting it.

This is exactly what I'm doing with Jackson, and it is working great so far! Jake isn't a barker, but Jackson was barking enough for the both of them. You have to be really consistent with it and use lots of praise. Leaving a radio or TV on when you're not home is also a good idea. I am home all day, and I've even found that if I don't have the TV on and they start getting whacko, they seem to settle down more after I turn it on. I guess they are so used to it that they like it for some reason lol Good luck to you!!!

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | You got some good advise - Chanel barks when she hears people outside my apartment too - but... I was told when I'm at work - they're both as quiet as little mice....the maintenance people even came in one day when I was at work and my girls stayed right in their little beds in my bedroom (which is the door I leave from) ....so I don't know what to tell you - it's possible they are NOT barking when you aren't there maybe ?? |

What I mean is - do you have a way you can block their access to the door where they hear everything and bark ? My apartment is one long unit - I have 2 doors - front and back so it's probably easier for me - but how about letting them stay in your room when you're gone ? I don't know what to tell you about when you're home cause my girls bark too when they hear someone right outside the door ....EXCEPT at night - when we're in bed - they're very very good. The water didn't work for me either lol - when they see it - they know that means a walk cause that's what I tried it for - they go INSANE when getting their harnesses on...I don't know how to get them to quietly get dressed - I think it's a lost cause

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | to update my last post - my (very cute) neighbors let me use their hose on my girls 'carpeted area' in exchange for watering their plants on their back patio.... and one of them just told me this morning "GREAT job with the girls barking.....whatever I'm doing is working" LOL...I DID NOTHING ! So I guess they WERE a bit loud when we 1st moved in - OOOPS ~ |

| I agree with the pweople that posted about the dog whisperer. It works with a lot of problems. My guys used to go crazy when they would see the cats. I could not get to all of them at once to make them stop. So I stood by the cats and bared my teeth at them and growled low, letting them know that this was MY cat and they needed to leave it alone. When one would get close, I would nip at it. I did this twice, and after that all I had to do was growl and bare my teeth from a distance and they would just turn and walk away. People saw me do that and were amazed at how the dogs responded. |

Well the first time I did it, it was kind of funny. I could not believe the looks on their faces. It probably does look hilarious, but it really does work. they didn't seem to eager to learn mfy language, (as you all know the Yorkie attitude) so I had to learn theirs.
