| Help! my yorkie doesn't stopping biting me!!! Hi, I have a 10week old female yorkie and for the past two days she has not stpped biting me. She latches on to my socks, jeans, and shoes. Worst of all, when I hold her she goes for my hands and fingers. I give her a firm NO but she then growls at me and she almost seems to get worse! Its been non stop for two days now and its driving me nuts! I dont know what to do, can anyone help? |

| I would tell her no! and then crate her for a few minutes. Every time she does it, crate her. She will catch on it is not acceptable.

| If she bites, tell her no, put her in for a few minutes. When you let her out if she bites tell her no, put her back in another few minutes. She will have to catch on. I would also ignore her while she is in the crate, walk away, do something else. She will not want to be in there alone, from my experience.

| I totally agree -- doggy time outs work a treat -- just one thing it'd be better if she couldn't see you from the crate. You could also try using a sharp loud "bah" sound instead of "no". I find that works much better for my little girl -- it makes her go "hmm, momma means it this time!". And be consistent, everytime she bites there's a consequence.

This morning she was much better than yesterday. I did put her in her crate once, but its a major improvement. I love this site, its so helpful and full of people who are so knowledgeable! Now, one more question, when she has time out, how long do you suggest leaving her in her crate for? | |

| I usually leave Tucker in time out for 5-10 minutes or until he settles down. I put him in the x-pen and he'll jump and be rowdy and then we he calms is when I let him back out. So if she whines or bucks in the crate I'd wait until she calms down, otherwise I'd say 5-10 minutes is sufficient. Tucker gets time out for going under the couch

| If you crate her when you are gone from the house or at night be careful how much you use the crate for a "time out" or she will begin to see the crate as a bad thing... Just for me personally, I would tell Lucy NO and throw a ball to distract her. They think we are their littermates when they first come home so they really think they are doing a happy thing "playing" with me. Rather than making her think she was doing something "wrong" I showed her what was "right".. That's just the way I did it and it worked.

| Also, don't foget to try spraying water (water gun or spray bottle) at them when they bite, or put some pennies in an empty water bottle to startle them. They will grow out of that phrase. Good luck

| I also was afraid of making the crate as a negative place for my yorkie what has worked for me is: whenever he bites me (even in the slightest way), I give a high pitched yelp (like another puppy would) and then i turn my back to him and ignore him for a minute. He now knows that i don't like that kind of play. What's really cute is when he forgets and is about to nip me, but catches himself, closes his mouth, and licks me instead |

| My yorkie is 6 months old and while she hasn't stopped biting altogether it has calmed down A LOT! I'm not sure if she is just growing out of it or whether its b/c of our doggy timeouts or what but thank god! Also I noticed she got better after her baby teeth fell out so I'm sure that had something to do with it. But while she bit a lot so never, ever growled at me or anyone else...so I can't help on that one. AND we gave the doggy timeouts in her crate and she still loves going in her crate on her own to take naps...so don't worry about that! |

OOh we two, Yogi and DOri that did that when they were wee little ones....We did this with both and it worked good for us....I would hold them, (not hard) by the hair on both sides of thier little mouths, get right up in their face and say, "no bite" two times and sit there for about 10 seconds like that, put them down and walk off...it stopped quite fast!!! I never put them in their crates for dicipline, I always feared they would associate the crate negatively after that..maybe not, but that was my thought.....I will reiterate though, we did not pull or hurt them when we would hold their hair, it was only to get their attention and keep thier face directed at my face..... Soon they learn what "no bite" means they will respond when they are biting you ankles and pants...

| my 13 wk old was starting to get into a nippy phase around 9 weeks. Telling her "no" doesn't have much effect, but a sharp "AH AH!" gets her to stop immediately (I learned this watching TV...dogs don't understand english so "no" is meaningless but "ah ah!" said sharply simulates a bark type sound that they understand as a reprimand.) Now when she starts to open her mouth I only have to get one "Ah!" out and she stops immediately. |

| Thank you all for your suggestions. I have quite the stubborn or. Time out was working but now all she does is bark for a very very long time when she is in there. Every time someone wants to hold her she bites them. I even went to Petco and bought some bitter apple and put it on my hands. She seemed to just lick my hands and nibble on them. I dont know what to do anymore. I'm hoping its a stage. She also barks none stop all the time. |
