| Help me with the basics... potty training Hi there Tia is still not picking pee pad trained. If I must admit, I think its due to me not really knowing what to do I have tried crating her, but the crate I was using was a carrier like crate and she does really like to be left in there for too long as its hard for her to see out of it; as a result I am extremely reluctant to put her in there for too long. So when I am out I confine her to the bathroom; with a pee pad in one corner and her bedding/ toys etc in another; but I think the space is too large for her as she usually goes anywhere other than the pad. When I am home she goes wherever I go, and I try to watch for the signs of her needing to go - I however seem to always miss it and she ends up going behind the sofa or some other inconspicuous place. So I am thinking of investing in a decent crate is this suitable? Dog Crates Company Dog Puppy Crates (scroll down to the 1st one)... it is 24" Long x 18" Wide x 20" High (60cm x 45cm x 51cm) What type of crate do you guys use, that your babies love? When I get it, should I section a bit off for her pad and a bit of for her living space? When should she be put in the crate? when I am out? When I think she needs to go? When its time for bed? I say this because she does not let me know when she needs to go, and will not go if I tell her to. I have tried taking her to her pad every so often especially after eating but she will not go for love or for money if I am waiting on her. Any tips etc would be very much appreciated... also crate recommendations are very welcome Thanks for listening!

| Bumping this for you. This is the ex-pen that I bought for my Chipper. Amazon.com: Iris 301515 CI-604 Commercial Grade... It is large enough for a doggie pillow and a piddle pad. I have been quite happy with it. It isn't very tall so if you have an escape artist you may have to look for a taller one. It is very easy to move/take apart. Read this thread: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/training/126837-wait-she-did-what.html I thought there were some very good suggestions in it. Good luck. For some reason the YT thread that I posted is not coming up. It is titled "Wait, she did what?! under the "training" section just where you are. Last edited by 4doggiemama; 04-21-2008 at 05:11 PM. |

| Oh Tia, you're being a pistol! Many dogs are different and most "parents' are different. So sometimes, you have to keep trying to get the perfect combination. Here are the things that worked for us. We used a small carrier type crate - just big enough to stand up and turn around. It's just my opinion, but I think your bathroom is too big while potty training. Coby LOVES his crate, but then he gets a treat each and every time he goes in on command. So he equates his crate with good things. He naps in there on his own throughout the day. When they were out of the crate, I watched them like a hawk. I even used the leash in the house just to make sure that I didn't get distracted and not notice them. I had trouble learning the potty signs. So I spent more time walking them back to the potty pad or to the door every 30 to 45 minutes. When the puppies were little, they were only out if I could pay 100% attention to them. If not, they were in the crate (with a treat, so they didn't mind - and if they did cry, covering the crate like a birdcage always calmed them down). Reggie (11 yrs) has free run of the house all the time. But Coby (1 yr) is still gaining freedom and is crated each time we leave. If we put on our shoes or coat, we don't have to say a word. If I don't get the dog purse down, he runs in the kennel to be locked up (and of course a treat!). He doesn't mind at all. Also, for the puppies, I'd suggest being patient and dilligent when you KNOW they have to go (like in the mornings). They have to stay on the pad or outside until they go. If they don't go, mine have to go back to the kennel, then we try again. The time it takes can sometimes by maddening. I had to call in some mornings to work saying "Sorry, I'll be late. Coby won't poop." Also, when Tia does go, be sure to 1) use the "Go Potty" command while she's going. Soon, you'll be able to say "Go Potty" and she will know what you want - great when you're in a hurry! 2) give GREAT treats, and 3) act like they just won the lottery!! Good Luck!!

| Crating didn't work for me. Itsy kept pooing and peeing on her bed or so close to it she would walk through it and get it everywhere, so I decided to nix that idea. She is 13 weeks now and is doing great. I am to the point where I can leave her alone in the living room with a baby gate up and trust her to go to her pee pad on her own (she doesn't have whole house privileges yet though!). A few things that have definitely helped...first of all treats. Praise is great but treats are better. When I was in the living room with her when she was training I was (literally) never letting her out of my sight and putting her on her pad every 5 or 10 mins and telling her "potty" and the moment she's in the act saying "good girl! good potty!" and would immediately reward her with a treat afterwards, and always make sure to walk her back to the pad and give her the treat while she's ON the pad. It did not take her long at all to figure out she was getting treats for pottying there and soon she was going there on her own and watching me as she went to make sure I was watching her so I knew she was doing good so she could get her treat! Also I bought her an X pen which has also helped a lot. Before, I had her in the kitchen with the gate up while I was gone which gave her way too much space so she was only going on the pads once in a while and having a lot of accidents all over the floor. Now that she has her pen she only goes on her pads in there, and still has room for her bowls and bed and some space to play. Not to mention it saved my sanity, not having to constantly worry about stepping in dog pee when I walk in the kitchen! |
