| potty pads for a newbie?? Ok so we got our (big) little man a week ago yesterday and I remember how easily I forgot what a hassle it was to take them out constantly! And we've never lived in a house that has carpet until now so I'm always freaking! Well it's been raining this weekend so of course everything is wet, he doesn't want to go outside, then we he does he comes back in wet...so we thought we'll potty pad train him to always use the pad in the house. Well we bought them today (nature's miracle?) and brought them home he was with us so I knew when we got out of the car he'd have to potty. So we opened the bag, set the pad on the middle of the kitchen floor and he pee'd on it! So we were excited! So then twice after he pee'd on the floor Well we put him in his kennel to eat dinner and when I came to wake him up we put him on the pad and said potty...we he came right off. We did this for probably 10 minutes before he pee'd twice on the floor next to the pad. Ugh. So my husband said put him in this big open bin we have with just the potty pad until he pees on it. So I did and within 5 minutes he pee'd on it so I took him out and gave him loves... So do you think this could work? Is there an easier way? Will this confuse him? |

| When Coby was little and would "wander off" when I knew he had to pee, we would either use a leash to keep him on the pad until he pottied or we'd use a small pen just around the pad that he'd stay in until he pottied (sounds exactly like the big bin you're using). Before long, they'll know that pottying on the pad is what gets the good treats. And they learn that play time comes AFTER pottying. Mine now can pretty much potty on the pad on command if I know they need to go. And as little Coby will tell you - it's the law that a treat is given each and every time you potty on the pad - so both he and Reggie come and tell us when they've pottied on their pad.

| Thanks! Great idea I just told my husband that we need to give him a treat for pottying on the pad...so he's pee'd on it a few times, but never poo'd...I'm wondering if this will be the next issue. Since he hasn't poo'd should I take him outside for a good shot that he will and sleep through the night? Or would that confuse him? |

| Different people have different opinions on that. Mine are trained to pads and outside both. But when they're little, you might want to stick with one til they get the idea. ALWAYS give treats for going on the pad. That will help them learn really quickly (even though you still have to be understanding of accidents). I swear that Coby has learned to divide up his pee into several tiny little potties so he gets more than one treat for it!!

| I really do appreciate the idea!! We got treats today with the potty pads and already at 11 weeks old he'll sit for the treat. He's even sitting when there is no treat! Now if he'll just stop pottying on the floor! |

| Jobey will just go teetee on the pad. They're suppossed to attract the puppies but for some reason Jobey wants nothing to do with it. But the treats are helping a little bit. When he does go potty on the pad we'll give him one of his treats and he seems happy for a while. Hopefully it'll start to click that we don't go potty on Mommy's floor!! |
