| What age do they ??? At what age do they seem to start giving you the hint that they need to go potty? Rudy is 3 months and when I take him to pee pad and sit/stand and tell him to go potty he does everything but go.. I take him away repeat and nothing then 1 minute later i catch him going somewhere else... this is happening about 50% of the time.. I tell him NO in a firm voice and take him to pee pad.. is there anything else I can do? When is does go he always gets praise and treats... bit confused any suggestions would be aprreciated..

| It sounds like you are doing everything right. You might add a treat for when he goes on the pad. Also, if you catch him going, praise and praise some more. Say good potty and get really excited happy. He will then understand he did it right. Puppies usually want to pee after eating, drinking, sleeping and playing, so be sure to put him on his pad at those times. If I am confident Holly needs to go, I put her in the room with her pad and leave her there until she goes. I think at this age, the secret is us people learning our baby's potty signs. Usually that means lots of walking and sniffing, and just before the act they generally start walking in circles or spinning. That is the time to grab him and put him on his pee pad. You can also put your baby in a harness and lead and walk him in circles to encourage him to pee. It works much like running water does for people. Holly is 13 weeks and she has the pee pad down pretty good, maybe 70% of the time. She is better with pee than with pooh. Oh yes, try the training pee pads called Quick Start or Rapid Start. They have a special scent that attracts the dogs to pee. They work much better than the sprays. Good luck. This just takes a lot of patience.

| One thing that will REALLY help is to use an exercize pen. Put her sleeping area in one corner (I used thier crate), put food in another corner near the crate, put potty pads furthest away from where she sleeps and eats and put toys for a play area in the last corner. At that age and until they can reliably be given the run of the house, they should be in the x-pen any time you cannot give 100% attention to them. Everytime they use they potty pads give lots of praise. With mine, I watched and if it looked like they were needing to go, I would take them outside and when they were done, back to the xpen. Once mine were going outside or on the pee pads reliably, I then gave them more freedom.

| It sounds like you are on the right track. Zoe is 10 months and rarely has an accident and when she does, it's usually my fault. I frequently think I better put her out and then I get sidetracked and if I don't catch myself, she'll have an accident. But if I watch, she dances around and tries to tell me. She does not bark or whine though. And I will say, do you have to go outside and then she really dances and gets excited. I think you have to use the same phrase for things, and they get the hang of it. Some people use potty bells but so far, Zoe has not gotten the hang of that although I have to admit, probably my fault. Good Luck and be patient. |

| My yorkie.......Lilly...........is 5 months, and she is finally becoming what I would call potty trained. We have not had an accident inside in about 2 weeks. She goes and sits by the door when she has to go. I have a bell there for her to ring, but she does not do that yet. Even so, I still ring it and have her ring it everytime we go out. I will look over, and see her sitting by the door. THen I know she has to go! I also make sure she is not alone in the areas where she went to the bathroom inside. I really feel like we are past the worst of it. The hard part is the weather.......it is a real bummer going out in the rain. I don't even mind the cold and snow as much as the rain. I have to hover over her with an umbrella. I don't really want her going inside, so we have just suffered through. She seems to go quicker outside when the weather is bad, probably so she can get in quicker. Lori |
