Spike has done two obedience classes (Beginner and Intermediate), and is on his second agility class now, and he is just as good as any of the other dogs in the class. I found that there were certain things that took a little longer for him to learn, so we'd have to practice those at home (STAY was a big one, and we're still working on that, although there has been a BIG improvement). Like all dogs, they have the things that they are really good at, and things that take a little more practice and patience. The bottom line, though, is that they are smart little dogs and they will learn as long as you are prepared to teach them.

I've found positive reinforcement works a gazillion times better and faster than negative reinforcement. I got this from a book by a professional trainer and researcher who trained animals for movies and wrote a book called "Don't Shoot The Dog." Pookie learns like within 2 lessons how to do things. I usually either position her the way I want, or I lead her to where I want while I say the command. Once she's where I want her or in the position I want, I give a treat and tell her what a good girl she is with lots of enthusiasm. She picks up super quick what she needs to do to get that treat and all that love from momma.

In my experience Yorkies are hard to housebreak, but I decided it is just because they are so stubborn. It took me a year to train my last yorkie, shelby, I would take him out and we would walk and walk and walk and come in the house and he would stand there and look right at me and go on the carpet.. but his face was so cute--well ya know... and he knew that...so I finally got him trained using a crate. But it is not just housebreaking they are stubborn about. In my house it was a matter of who was more stubborn, me or him..I usually won out, but it was not an easy win...but it was all worth it. they are just so loving and sweet. I also think some of it was payback for leaving him to go to work everyday. But I tried to explain to him, "mommy don't work, you don't eat or have a nice warm house"..he just didn't want to hear it..Be patient it will be so worth it... I wish I still had my baby here to aggravate me.

Maybe the trainer was afraid of the liability if another dog tried to harm your Yorkie. Yorkies are so small and many dogs view them as prey.

| My Little Man! Donating Member | I dont think its hard to train a yorkie at all. They are very smart little fellas! The whole point of the training is the persistance and patience, to give a treat to your furkid when he did the command exactly right. I worked with my Maxi myself on the commands since he was a little pup. Now he is 1 years old and he knows so many commands: sit, give a paw, wave, lay down, play dead, roll over, take a bow, stand on two paws, leave it, wait, be quiet, voice etc also knows the names of two toys but we are working on the rest . You can defenately do it yourself all you need is 30 min of each day to train and little by little you ll get what you want Good luck!
