Are yorkies hard to train? we have just enrolled Hollie into puppy training classes but are yorkie's easy to train?? i am asking this because the one class we rang said that we cant go as we have a yorkie!! please help!! lucy xx |
Ive heard/read that Yorkies are a little hard to train. Not sure if its the breed or if its because they're small dogs... However, I believe every animal is trainable with persistance and a lot of patience :) Welcome to YT :D |
they can be stubborn but it just depends on your pup! there is a lady on YOU tube who has like a 5 or 6 month pup with knows how to sit, roll over, lay. lol! all kiele knows how to do is sit right now. skoshi can sit, lay, shake. |
I think their trainable if you have the time and patience to work with them. I think it was rude of those people to tell you that you couldn't come, because you had a Yorkie. |
i'm a new yorkie owner, but i can say that my pup is definitely trainable. she is 11 weeks old and now knows how to sit/stay. she's doing really well with it, and we'll begin working on a new skill soon. |
I never heard such a thing. I did hear that Yorkies can be hard to potty train but not obiendence traiing! I think that a Yorkie is one of the smartest little dogs ever. With any training you need to be consistant and have patience. Buddy could, sit, lay down, give kisses and shake when he was 7mos old. He was completely potty trained by 5mos. It is just he and I and my time is spent with him when I'm not working. He went into puppy classes at 6mos old. The Yorkie book I purchased by a female writter stated that she was also a trainer and believed the Yorkie to be easy to train. So I"m baffled by the answer you received regarding training. |

I have 5 yorkies and three I got at 8 weeks and two were ones from my litters. I can say they were all easy to train when you are consistent. My first Yorkie was very easy to train and learned sit, stay, leave it, come, down by 6 months. The two I had from birth never were caged and were potty trained by example from the other dogs. They were pad trained by 10 weeks with few accidents. As for sit and stay they learned by example from the others in the pack. Yorkies are very smart. My male was the hardest to train and he finally learned everything by 1 year EXCEPT 'go home' which means go to their pen. He hates it and actually crawls around like he can no longer walk, it is too funny! :yelrotflm He need to be carried every time. We think it is just plain stuborness on his part. :scratchhe |
Did they tell you exactly why they wouldn't take your Yorkie? It could be because they work with to many large dogs or it could be they work with choke collars (which can really, really harm a Yorkie). |

Yorkies Yorkies are very smart..but self-willed and difficult to train if the owner is a push-over. Yorkies will compete for "Top position" in the house..and delegate the owner as second position...making it hard to get them to listen. |

Personally, I think some trainers have a bias towards the larger breed dogs. They do catch on a bit quicker, but I would not say they are any easier to train. My puppy school gladly accepted Gracie, but I really felt during the class that the instructors preferred the larger breeds, at least it was the larger breeds that they always selected for demos. My Gracie caught on really quick, and even picked up on things I did not realize I was teaching her. It is all about repetition and consistency. I'm a firm believer that you get out of training what you put into it, no matter the breed or size of dog. |
If one more person tells me a dog never dirties in his crate I will scream. My yorkie is 4 mo. He eats at 7:00 am dinner at 5pm. goes out several times during the evening and to bed about 10:00. Every morning I have a gift in the cage. He does not wet just dirties. He seems smart and is as happy and frisky as can be but I think I am the one that is trained. He doesn't go by the door I just take him out every couple of hours. I must be doing something wrong here. Help |
Suzy hasn't been hard to train at all. She's 5 months old next week and knows how to sit, drop and we're working on roll over and come at the moment. She also knows off - get off the bed, stay - don't run out the door when she's not supposed to - we're still working on that... Of course, she's stubborn and doesn't want to learn sometimes all she wants to do is play, but they're very intelligent creatures so all it takes is regular training and persistence. |
