| I REALLY need help with SIT!! Hello Hello!!!! Wow! My first night with Dash was GREAT!!!! He's such a good little boy - I got VERY lucky! We went to bed about 10 or 10:30 then got up once around 1 to go potty. Next thing I know it's about 6:45 and he was in his crate just chewing quietly on his bone!! So we got up and went potty then played for a bit, ate breakfast, pottied AGAIN, then went to take a nap! Haha - the owners before me had a 2 yr. old little boy so Dash and him were on the same schedule (i.e. LOTS of naps! YAY!) Anyway - now I'm working on basic commands... He was named Manny with his last owners but I think he's already learned that he's Dash now. He's pretty good about coming when you say his name, but I tried to work on sit this morning and OH MY GOSH. I'm going to pull my hair out!! Haha! I know it doesn't just happen overnight, but he won't sit still when I'm trying to do anything with him. If I'm ignoring him, yes, he'll calm down and lay around like a lug. But I just feel like I don't know where to begin to try to teach this. I know some of you have said that it just took a few hours or a day or two to teach sit, so I'm hoping that he'll get the hang of it. ANY ADVICE?? |

| Old Threads If there are any old threads that have this information, could you please put a link on here? I don't know if I'm just stupid or what, but I can't seem to find what I want. |

| Sounds to me like you are already one great Mama. Teaching to sit is very simple, if you use treats. Maggie likes tiny pieces of American Cheese for treats. Each time we go outside to potty, we go inside for a treat. She must sit before she get the treat. If she jumps around, NO TREAT. Hold the treat above the nose, and just slightly up toward the head. They automatically have to look up, and when they do, they will sit down. Say the word sit while doing this. If he doesn't want to drop his butt, then gently push his butt down, while you are holding the treat above his head. Don't forget to say "Sit" while doing this too. Good Luck

| Sit is a very simple trick to learn. USE TREATS! When your baby is standing up, take a treat and hold it a little bit above his nose (like Brenda said above) and say "SIT" If he jumps, don't give him the treat and say "NO" Keep trying until he sits. Then praise and give him a treat. Once he gets the hang of it, keep practicing until all you have to do is say "SIT" I hope I helped! |

| I lightly pushed Stewie's butt down while repeating "sit" and he got it in about 10 minutes. That is pretty much the only thing he knows how to do (besides "stay") After that, I started holding treats about his head like Brenda suggested and he was doing it by himself.

| Bailey didnt learn with holding it above his head or the pushing his butt, But he learned very quickly with the " hold in front and lift above his head, as he followed it with his eyes, his butt went down" Now, its more like sign language .... I dont even have to say SIT, but if I take my hand and put it out and lift it up about 6-8 inches, he will SIT.

| Treats are the trick!!! Be patient, and make it fun for your baby. They can tell when you are getting frustrated and that's not fun. Lots of praise and your baby will be sitting in no time.

| Thank you all for your help... Unfortunately I feel like I've tried most of that - any time he knows I have a treat, he LUNGES towards my hand.. sniffing and licking and stuff. Even if I hold the treat just a LITTLE above his nose, he's jumping and freaking out trying to get it. I'll say NO and try to reposition him, but since he knows it's in my hand, he'll throw his head back and try to bite my hand. AHHH!! Did anyone have problems with this? My mom suggested that I use his favorite ball instead to try and teach this, but I don't know what's best. Thanks again! |

| I know EXACTLY what you are going through... Our little Mia is 11 wks old. We got her at 8 wks, and the week we got her, we were trying to teach her to "sit". Our neighbor used to judge terriers, and he told us to hold the treat above her head, and she would sit, or to push her bum down, and say "siiiitttt" while doing so. What a joke!!! She was so spastic, that she just jumped all over the place and wouldn't even focus on the treat above her head!!! She just knew there was a treat somewhere, and she was on a mission to find it! We gave up for a week, and just let her get used to the idea of "treats", and us, and her new environment, and started working with her the second week she was here. She then picked up "sit" in about 10 min, and now knows, "lay down", "shake", and "say please" (she does this cute little growl for her treat...soooooooo cute!!!!) Can you tell I am a VERY proud mommy!!?? I don't know how old Dash is, but maybe he just needs to get "settled" in. Don't worry, he will be a very smart dog, and pick it up so easily! Especially because you are such a good mom to him, and are so dedicated to him! You remind me of myself... I am a new mom to Mia, and I just want her to have the best life, and know EVERYTHING....RIGHT NOW!!! He will get it! Hang in there! Oh, and I just tried Honey Nut Cheerios with Mia... she goes CRAZY for them, and will do anything for them! Try that! Sorry I rambled... I hope this helps a little!!! And Congrats on your baby! |
