| I'm a Dummy about Breeding! Please Help I have a pair of 6# Yorkies. Samson is 16 months old and Delilah almost 2 years. They are inseparable. Deli was in heat 2 months ago and I just let nature take its' course. I'm not sure if they actually locked as I'm not always at home. Bottom line - she's not preggers. Do I need to try to separate them the next time she's in heat and just let them be together when I want them to mate? I'll appreciate any suggestions. Thanks. |

| Yes you should separate them! Two dogs should NEVER be left alone to mate. If unsupervised, you put them at risk for injury during breeding. Also, I saw in one of your earlier post that you are not confident in veterinary care in your area. If that is the case, why would you want to breed? What would you do if there was a problem with the female during pregancy? How would she get the proper medical care she needed? Sounds like a very big risk not worth taking, IMO. You never let nature take it's course....great damage could be caused to your male and render him unable to stud again.....you need to be very active while breeding....another pair of hands would help..someone to hold the female and another person to assist the male. The female should be held gently until the tie (not lock) is completed...This is to keep her from biting or draggin him around.... Keep them seperated during the heat cycle.....1 week coming in, 1 week showing color, and 1 week coming out (breeding time)....only bring them together when you breed them (one time, every other day. Until the next time....I really think you should study everything you can on breeding, whelping and raising a litter...And especially make sure that both meet the standard and free of genetic defects.

| Thank so very much. My vet has helped quite a few friends who had dogs with problem pregnancies and I trust him with mine. He'll be keeping Samson between matings. Both Sam and Deli will miss each other, but they will be fine. |
