Looking for mentor I have a yorkie who is 8 weeks pregnant and I was hoping to find someone who could help answer some additional questions I have. This is the first time I have bred my little girl and have been trying to do everything correctly. Just yesterday my vet gave me information I have never heard before and the breeder I usually talk to is across the country at the moment. If anyone would be willing to answer questions for me I would appreciate it... if you are in the Monterey or SF Bay area of California that would be even better. Thank you.

Sorry I'm not close by (PA), but I'll help however I can. You can e-mail me personally at sylvanyorkies@entermail.net and I'll try to answer any questions or point you toward someone who can. There are some very experienced breeders on here with good advice, I'm sure they'll post you to help. Stacy

| You are about ready to go! When do you expect the babies? Mine delivered on day 59. Puppies are 5 weeks tomorrow.

Thank you so much for answering. I am not sure of the exact day. June 30 th should be the 59th day from the first breeding. Getting close and I am getting nervous so am forgetting some things I think. What should I be looking for in the eighth week that aren't in the seventh... ie: heartbeats? babies kicking?, etc. She had an x-ray on Friday which showed four pups and that she should be able to have them, but I am wondering if they would grow much more before birth making them to big. I do have other questions also but that is all I can think of at the moment.

Smart to have the x-ray done, and if she whelps by Thurs/Fri, they shouldn't be that much bigger. Your vet would have/should have told you if it was a concern. Try to relax, it sounds like you are doing things right.

Thank you for the replys... My mentor is/was my stud's owner but she has to be across the states currently. I am just looking for a bit of additional information as the time gets near to ease my worries. Nerves ya know!! Gingi had an ultrasound done about a week and a half before and it showed six pups but now the x-rays is showing four. I have been doing my research and talking to the breeder and trying to do everything right. I appreciate the fact that I have found a place for help. Especially considering the fact that my vet has given me information that contradicts not only everything I have heard, but even herself in the same conversation.

Your first whelping will make you crazy. You will think every dangerous thing might happen but not to worry. We cannot just say "Let Nature take its course!" cause we have already intervined and the ituation is one of domestic animal delivery. Do you have an emergency vet that you can call if there are real problems in the middle of the night? Did you take the X-rays home so you will have them with you? Do you have your delivery kit already set up in case you need to help with the cord or with a puppy in distress? Do you know how to rub the puppy to stimulate breathing? Can you tie and cut a cord if NEEDED? Do you have a small suction to suck mucus out of the puppy's mouth? Do you know the signs of trouble? Green stool and the like? Is your whelping box such that there are vents in the sides down near the bottom so mom cannot squish a baby and suffocate it? Will the box be near an A/C duct? If so, block the cold air from the babies.. Gosh, I don't mean to scare you, but the fact it that your mom is inexperienced (I think I read that) and so are you(I also think I read that) If not, and you already know all those things...disregard this post.. Stacy (Sylvan) is experienced and either she or I can be PM'd or e-mailed. My addy is Whispersmom2003@Yahoo.com..GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!

I am already getting there (crazy) very rapidly!! Yes, I have an emergency hospital, but no specific doc at night. My vet told me I would not need the x-rays as the pups will grow between now and birth time and they would do me no good, but I could get them if I should. My delievery kit is ready with the exception of the suction thingy which I will get today. I am aware of how to cut the cord and do have the supplies to do so. I know signs of trouble but possibly not all of them. I will have to recheck the whelping box and see if their are vents, there is railing. The air duct is closed and covered already. And yes she and I are both new to this. I am happy to know the things you are telling me are already done; it helps me know I am doing the things properly. I appreciate the help from everyone and I may need support as/if I panic as her time gets closer.

Well, you just go, girl!!!!!!!! The reason I like the X-rays is this. If My baby delivers say 1 or2 puppies at home and stops. I have to go to the emergency vet and they say "Are you SURE she was carrying 4? I only feel one more." You can say "Yep, got the proof right here!". They still will most likely do another X-ray but it might not be necessary. I can also match head sizes in the ones already born with the ones in X-ray and see if we have a really big honker that is blocking things up and no matter how much Oxy, he is not gonna come out.. I just feel more in control when I have all the info...The puppies might grow a wee bit, but skeletons will be about the same...they will have a bit more body fat..Good Luck!!!!

You got Rini on board so you don't really need me, but I do have a question, What did the vet say that was contradictory?

Was this vet recommended by your mentor/stud owner? It is much more reassuring when you are comfortable with your vet, and knowing that they are familiar with yorkies. Are you aware of the temp drop that signifies whelping? It will let you know when to truly panic. Just kidding, everybody is nervous the first time and spends many sleepless nights EVERY time.

| I am going to guess you have a book. I read through two almost every night for the last week. It made me more scared, but the birth went so smooth - it was her first litter and she didn't even read the book! She had the first one on my bed and woke me up cleaning it up. I woke up my two teen sons at 5:00 am to watch with me. One was keeping track of how long between puppies. When she was done(5 pups by 7:30a), it felt like there were two more, one in each horn. Maybe it is swollen. My son watched the clock for two hour, per book - no longer between pups. He was ready to pack up and head to the vet. I felt her again, and thought 'no more puppies.' I said, as long as she seems fine, we will not worry.

Thank you Sylvan.... I don't want to panic prematurely, and it is not something I am use to doing. The vet was not recomended by my breeder. I live about 4-5 hours away from her. There are only two emergency vets open all night and this one has vets during the day also. I have been going to that clinic for other dogs I have had. Laura... thank you for letting me know of your experience and posting those pictures of your pups. Though I know of the bad things it is so nice to hear of the positive first experiences also. When I get a little nervous I come here and become a bit more relaxed.
