| How Old is Too Old? At about what age do female Yorkies quit having litters? You know, sort of like human menopause? I haven't seen anything regarding this. |

| Dogs do not have menupause. They do however become less fertile as they age and are more apt to have problems including more spontaneous abortions and still births. The age that the female should stop being bred depends upon her health and how many litters she has had. Few breeders breed past 6 years of age.

| Out of curiosity, is it the same for the male dogs? At what age do you stop breeding them? Thanks for the info!

| i have two sisters that I breed. they will be five in March. difference is night and day. One did not have that "bounce back" that I like to see in my females after whelping. of course, I skipped her last heat and depending on what I think about her health, I will breed her one more time at age five, then she is for sure retired. She is in excellent health, just seemed to have a slower recovery period. Now that being said, her sister Kandy is like a spring chicken. she is pregnant now. if this whelp goes well as the others always have, I MIGHT not retire her until six. it just depends on your bitches. |

| I thought it was almost indefinitely for the male dogs (kind of like men... )... AKC states the male must be no older than 12....(same for female).

| Thanks for all the replies everybody! My female isn't five yet. Also she's had more than a full years rest. I think I'll continue to breed her for awhile as she's such a good mother and doesn't seem to have any problems during or after pregnancy. She loves her puppies! |

| After the age of 8 a males sperm may begin to lessen in fertility but successful matings have taken place between young bitches and dogs as old as 15 years. An affidavit of fertility, signed by a qualified veterinarian, must accompany the registration of a litter whose sire at the time of mating was 12 years of older.

| AKC says Go to AKC on line and read their rules. They have specific minimum and maximum ages that a dog may produce a registerable litter, whether male or female. I recently read it because I have a young stud who is very eager to breed. I wanted to make sure before I allowed him any access to females that he was old enough. The minimum male age is 7 mo. but I didn't notice the max female age. Of course, it also depends on her health, but you and her doctor know that. Again, check the AKC rules. Good luck.

| When to stop breeding My Paris is five, we'll do one more litter and that's it. I wouldn't breed past 6. Males, I wouldn't breed past 7 or 8. |

To answer the question of the OP, I would not personally breed a female past the age of 5, males around the age of 7. | |
