My opinion on this matter is: I can't blame the breeders of these designer dogs. They breed because, yes there's money to be made from people who want them. My son has one and paid $1,000.00 for Charger who is a cavapoo. Mother a king charles cavalier spaniel and father a mini poodle. I don't think that this is where the problem lies. Charger will have a loving home forever, however, it's the people who buy the dogs that become the problem. Weather a prue breed or a designer dog or just a mix from a neighbor if the person decides the pet is not longer wanted off to the pound it goes. The blame for over population in the pounds in general, belongs to the "HUMANS" who no longer have need for the free or big bucks dog! IMO

I have a half Yorkie and half Maltese and I adore her!! I wanted a Maltese but did not want to deal with the high maintenance white coat. And since I love Yorkies obviously as well I decided what a great way to get the traits I love about the Maltese and Yorkie all in 1 dog As far as the shelter goes..I have adopted in the past and I donate the our local shelter. I think adopting is wonderful!! HOWEVER...when adopting a mix from a shelter...how do you know what breeds you are getting? A lot of times you do not. A lot of breeds have their own personality traits and I think for ME it was important knowing what breed my new addition was. Last edited by ashley809; 05-09-2007 at 07:27 AM.

i didnt read all the post because there are some many but the only small breeds you find in va are sick or old i work at a shelter in va in that 2 years we had one yorkie poo who never made it to the list and about people mixing to mix, yes there are people who do that but there are people who are working on the next breed the information came from AKC how can i go wrong there?? and every other bit of info found basically said the same..so the yorkie which i adore did come from people experimenting and mixing. im not jusifying me doing the same thing but the real problem isnt the breeder its the people wanting them and paying the money for them, the breeders are keeping up with the demand basically. there is nothing wrong with mixing, because people want the small mixed breeds, its the two mutts on the street like a lab/shep and a rotti/pit mixing that is holding spots in our kennels and people really dont want that heinz 57. people what the cute and cuddle pup that looks like a puppy always and no if i paid $$ or more for a dog and for some reason i cant keep im finding a good home and trying to get some of the money back, im not giving anything way for free, this world is too exspensive for that. i would ask for porbably half of what i paid, which would not include the other money invovled like vaccines and toys and care. even if i got it for free i would ask an adoption fee. adoption agencies are great but, for example the one i have worked with is too strict and a lot of other agencies are the same, and they push potential customers away

Yes, it is not an entirely correct. AKC though a wonderful registry, it is just that a registry. Go to the YTCA.org site and see the History of the Yorkshire Terrier as studied, written and published by one of the Yorkshire Terrier Matriarchs. The Standard was written by the YTCA and adopted by the AKC.

Ytca explains that they were mixed with the danidimont and maltese but with old english terrier and clydesdale terriers, which are no longer in existance..they were still mixed which is the point that im trying to get across...all the groups on that explain yorkie history throw in something different but the end result was the same they mixed dogs to get a desired trait and bred down for smaller sizes.
