| Need Help with Birth in Georgia HI Everyone! This is new for me, and I hope that it works! I have a little dilemma that I am hoping someone can help me with. I am a yorkie mom in Georgia (near Atlanta) and my baby got pregnant accidentally (she's 2.5 years old). I know, I know she should have been spayed, but she was just too tiny and I was waiting for her to gain some weight and then take her, but in the meantime she went in heat and my other yorkie got to her (she had a puppy diaper on and everything!!!) She is only 5 lbs and very tiny. So, now I am faced with a birth that I am very scared about. I have been talking to my vet, but she doesn't know about births!!! And I live an hour from the nearest emergency clinic, so I am afraid if she goes into labor at night or on the weekend I could be in trouble. Almost 2 years ago I had a mommy that I bred and she had FIVE pups...one got stuck and we had to drive an hour in the middle of the night and pay $800 for the emergency c-section. The breeder that I had arranged to be there with us never showed and I had no idea what to do. All the money and hassle is worth it, as long as she was fine (and she was - but 2 pups died). But it was enough drama to make me give it up for good because I love my babies too much to put them through that again. So, this accident has me in a pickle. I am actually looking for a RELIABLE breeder (fromer breeder, etc) or experienced yorkie mommy that could come and be with us during the birth to notice any signs of distress. I am willing to pay for this service if I need to and I just want anything to keep my baby girl safe. Does anyone know of who I can call? |

| I dont know where all the breeders are but if it were mine and she is tiny, I might find a vet that is well versed in c-sections and schedule an appt.for a consultation. I would still find another vet, even if you do find someone to help you they wouldnt be able to do a c-section. How big is your male? Well good luck, I hope everything goes ok for you!! |

Donating YT 14K Club Member | A vet that doesn't know nothing about birthing? I'd have to get another more experienced vet. We had our first litter of yorkies April 29th. My momma weighed 4 1/2 lbs pre-pregnancy. She got up to 7+ lbs during her pregnancy. Yes, she ate VERY well! PM me if you have any questions. I'm not as experienced as many other breeders here, but I'll tell you all I know from my experience. |

| Nervous I know how you feel. My younger female who is 5.5-6lbs (and very compact) pre-pregnancy had her first litter in May. I was so nervous and of course not only was she 6 days early (Yikes!) but like all of my other litters she decided to deliver near midnight. I called a friend of mine who has been breeding for over 20 years and she was of course worried because they were quite early. She reminded me to watch for stress signals such as long periods of time contracting w/out any progress & lots of green discharge which can indicate a dead pup (a little is normal). If you are that worried about your baby, what you might ought to do, if you know her due date, is send her to a reputable vet or breeder that can be with her during her birthing process. I do not know if a vet would even do that but I guess it might be worth a try. At 5lbs., she should be okay- but there are always special cases. How big was the male that bred her? I know of a lady who has a femal under 4lbs. that had 5 puppies her last litter w/out her owner even knowing she had whelped until she found them all alive and healthy under her bed!!!

| Information on whelping Dear Kemfy, I live here in GA and have shown, breed starting back in the late 70's. Yes. five pounds is a nice size for breeding - normal. What size is your male? That is the question. Maybe you think your female is small, since you might be comparring her to your male. I would get a vet that specialized in the smaller breeds. You will be better off with someone that knows about smaller dogs. They can check her to see if she looks like she will whelp okay on her own. I would also get a book about breeding and raising small dogs - one is from Mayfair line of yorkies breeder - Ann Seranne, called "The Joy of Breeding Your Own Show Dog." ISBN # 0-87605-413-0. I know you won't be showing, but the information inside is what you are looking for. It tells you step-by-step what to do and what signs to look for in case of an emergency. Best of luck. Let us know how it comes through. |

| Three weeks left.... Thank you for all the good advice...I will certianly keep it all in mind. We went to the Vet Saturday and got the x-rays. Showed two babies and maybe three. We could not tell because the bones have not formed enough yet, which means we have more time than I thought. She is so fat!!! I feel so bad for her. I called my old vet and he was wonderful!! He spent so much time talking to me and reassuring me about the birth and that any emergency that we would have we could call him and he would help any way he could. He also told me that if the birth happens during his office hours, I could bring her there and just have one of the exam rooms and sty until she's done. I feel much better about it and I don't think I will be going back to the other vet anymore. I will keep you posted and send photos when I get them. Thanks for all the advice!!! Kemfy |
