| Ok, another question: Ok, please don't hate me, but I just want to be upfront with everyone on this site so I can do the best thing for our future puppies. If you've read my dogster pages, you'll know that Dexter is a rescue. Of course, with rescues there was no registration for him nor could I ever get him registered even though you can tell he's obviously a purebred. With Lily, I got 'scammed' by a breeder from The Greensheet here in Houston,TX. I bought her and was promised her AKC papers, then she never gave them to me after many calls. She kept telling me she was "waiting for them to get to her from AKC." I loved Lily so much I didn't care after a certain point. Then she changed her number and now who knows where she went. Anyway, as you know, Lily is pregnant which wasn't "planned" nor were we looking to become breeders. We are getting them both 'fixed' after she has puppies. So, now, here I am going to have these little, cute puppies (as long as everything goes ok with her whelping) and they are going to be paperless. I feel really bad that we did this but can't really turn back time now. Since so many of you are such expereinced breeders, I'm looking to you all for advice. I know what we did is majorly frowned upon and again, I'm sorry. But, what's done is done and now here we stand. After reading this site and really seeing how dedicated you breeders are and what goes in to breeding yorkies I feel so ashamed for letting this happen..... But, I guess as with anything you live and learn. Has anyone else had puppies that didn't have papers due to similar circumstances as mine? From our last vet visit, we think she is going to have 3 puppies. We are pretty much giving one to our mother in law (just charging her vet costs) and we may or may not keep one for ourself. That means I will have one or two left. I'm still looking for a friend or family member first, but if I can't find one then I will have no choice but to try and sell the rest paperless. Do I tell the future buyer that since they are paperless then it is to be a 'pet only' pet no breeding and what's a good price to ask for a non papered puppy? I know it will be pretty cheap, but I don't want to just give it away to someone, plus recouping some of the vet costs will be good. I know my dogs are purebred and I'm also scared to have ppl come over to my house after all these yorkie thief stories, etc. How do you know someone is going to give it a good home??? Anyway, any help will do....

| OK, I'll tell you my honest opinion...please don't take it the wrong way. If I were you: First, examine what you have here: 1) Dexter is a rescue. As far as what people look for when breeding, there is alot you don't know about him--his age, genetic background, medical history. Even though he may look full bred, you really cannot be certain of that...of for Lily for that matter as you obviously had a run in with a very shady breeder. 2) Your female does not fall within the standard for the breed...she is 10 pounds, correct? 3) They are unregistered. Not ideal, by any means, but the best thing you can do is be honest with anyone that is interested. Tell them upfront they are not registered and the truth behind the situation. I know there are registries out there that will register them anyway, but IMO, what would be the point? I would think that would be presenting something false to any perspective owner. YES! They should not be used as breeding stock...because you don't know anything about the line of the parents, you in turn do not know the background of the pups. In NO way should that be repeated. Also, 'telling' new owners they should be pets only is not going to guarantee that they will not be bred. I understand not wanting to just give them away...you will still be out of pocket money and I question anyone out to get a free/cheap pup of ANY kind. I would think though that given the situation, you should try your best just to break even on cost (which is hard in any case) and consider yourself lucky if you do. Accidents happen...maybe they 'shouldn't' happen, but they do. Being upfront and telling everyone just what you've said here is the only thing you can do, really. The best thing you can worry about now is making sure your girl is getting the care that she needs and preparing yourself as best you can in the time you have. | Absolutely agree.....honesty is the best. But, there is one question left unanswered....you wanted to be assured that these pups wouldn't be used for breeding.....you don't have AKC papers to hold back as possible assurance that that won't happen...another thing you may think of doing is offering them to pet families but, informing them that they will not be allowed to go until they are altered.

Yeah you're right. I really don't want to make money off these dogs. I think breaking even would be ideal, but honesly I am really hoping I can find another family member or friend to take them. I really want to know they're going to a good home and I want to watch them grow up too.

How do you make sure they're altered before they go to their home? I am planning on keeping them until they're 12 weeks old at least. They can be altered that young? Do the new owners pay me and then I take them to get altered or what?

You could have them altered before they leave your home. I have the owner sign a sales agreement stating that they will have s/n done by xxx date or the pup will be surrendered back. Don't be afraid to ask for references...I have found their vet can be a valuable source of info regarding their past responsibility as pet owners. Be sure you have a good sales agreement to cover your own tail. | |
