| S&V Quality Pups in Brooklyn Hi everyone, I went to S&V Quality Pups and fell in love with an 11 week old female maltese. Although I was not super keen on the location of store itself when I walked in, a couple who had purchased her terrier there (Benny who is now 2) was very happy with the place and came back to get her dog a playmate. This gave me a sense of comfort, although as I read the one comment her about a woman who bought 3 dogs and all had/have health problems, I am starting to worry. I put a $200 deposit to hold the dog because I will be out of town for the next few days and am now torn as to what to do. I did not deal with an Ivan there but someone by the name of Vincent. Can anyone offer some sound advice on how I should proceed? I already am attached to the puppy but certainly want to protect myself from being scammed if this place is selling dogs which are not healthy. I have a DRA # which I still am unsure how to check online since the website does not give me that option and yet it seems that anyone can register the dog on DRA and the process is not very strict or thorough which is causing me even more anxiety. The breeder deals with two different vets that he recommended me to bring within 10 days of picking her up which will be free but I am thinking I would bring her to an inbiased vet which I used for my cat before she passed away. Do I have any recourse for the deposit? Is there anything else I can use to check up on these guys? I am very worried about this now yet I am even more worried about the puppy and I have already grown attached. Anyone? |

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | not to scare you ...but several members here have bought their dogs from S&V...Hopefully they'll see this thread and post to you.....that store sure gets around There have been health issues with puppies... but also - it's my understanding that he buys his puppies from Puppy Mills. (a large percentage of Pet Stores buy from Mills).... which is NOT good. you're much better off finding a reputable breeder and starting over.... Here's a thread http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...t=Quality+Pups and if you search the site there are more - I didn't really understand your question ...but IF you're planning to get the puppy - I would bring it to your OWN vet and not use any vet a pet store refers.... |

| I preface what I am going to tell you by saying that, thankfully, Emma is healthy. That said, I was very badly taken by S&V Quality Pups. I was referred to them by another breeder is Brooklyn. I was looking for a tiny Maltese. They showed me Emma. She was stunning. They told me she was 16weeks old and weighed 2.5#. Based on what I knew I figured she would top out at 4-5#. I remember, he put her in my arms, then went to make a phone call. By the time he got back, I wasn't giving Emma bag. I was charged a premium because she was a (pardon the expression) t-cup. This was Saturday. I took her to the vet on Monday. It was there that I found out that she was not 16 weeks old. She probably wasn't more than 9 or 10 weeks old. Emma is now 11#. As I said, thankfully she is healthy, just more to love. I do, however, resent being taken so badly. I know that you have fallen in love, I can't tell you what to do, but I know that I would never go back there. Lizzie- P.S. They were not Emma's breeder. They brokered her. I never got papers. I have no idea who the breeder was. |

| Hi: I bought Millie from S & V in Brooklyn, Ivan was not there at the time so I dealt with Vinny. To tell you the truth, I am very happy with my little girl. She is 1 1/2 years old and never had a sick day in her life (knocking on wood). She is beautiful, great personality, beautiful coat, etc.. etc.. Yes, I was not thrilled with the place, and the only reason why I bought Millie was because I fell in love with her the minute I laid eyes on her, but luckily, things has worked out well for me. I am now buying a third puppy and I didn't consider going back to S & V.. but, again.. I have no reason to complain.

| I am probably the person you are referring to who bought 3 dogs from Ivan. Ivan is the owner and Vinny works for him. When Ivan is not there, Vinny runs the shop. Ivan is a broker. I won't go into detail about my experience but check out post #10 on this thread (that's an old post I made explaining my situation in detail): http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...t=Quality+Pups I honestly would not recommend buying from them ever again. But if you do, I wish you and your pup all the best of luck.

| You can probably find a quality maltese from a reputable breeder probably for the same price as you're paying for a puppy from a pet store. You can buy from someone who knows their lines and tests their dogs for congenital diseases. If you buy from a pet store you don't know where the dogs come from. A lot of pet stores like to say, "our dogs come from reputable breeders", but mainly the pups come from puppy mills. Go to www.foxstonemaltese.com and click on the button that says Links, and then look for a button that says maltese breeders. Most of them are reputable breeders and if they don't have pups they can point you in the right direction or refer you to a friend of theirs who may have pups. Good luck in whatever you do! I know what it's like to fall in love with a pup As far as taking your dog to a vet, I would definitely take her to your vet, not theirs...

| Thank You Thank you for the advice I really appreciate it. When I went to S&V I did think of them as a puppy store but as a breeder. I have been very torn but have decided I am not going to leave Lilly there. I will bring her to my vet and pray she is healthy and the exception to the other puppies mentioned here. I will keep you informed, thank you again! |

| Let me go at it from another angle. I consider myself a reputable breeder and as myself and other reputable breeders would tell you , I would never sell a puppy of mine through a third party such as a pet store or broker. I need to be able to interview and take the resonsibility for anything may arise with the dog or puppy. I must also know the person getting the puppy and approve the home via interviews. I also don't ship for those reasons. If you were a breeder, would you put your precious loved puppies in the hands of someone else to sell to whoever walks in and buys it? I know I wouldn't. |
