| Mom has been barking and crying at pups since the Vet.... Mom was barking and crying the whole time we were gone with the pups at the Vet. When we got home, we put the pups back in there spot, and let Princess inspect. She nudged them around ALOT, and lick them all over, then got up and left. She hears them cry and goes back with them, licks them and then starts barking. She is hiding behind the toilet, and in the linen closet and barking. If we lie her down for to let the pups nurse, she will stay there quietly as long as we are in there with her, but as soon as we get up, so does she, even if the pups are still nursing. Then she will get on our bed, and when she hears the pups cry, she starts barking, jumps off the bed, goes in there and barks more. Has anyone gone through this before? I called the Vet and he said to just keep her nursing, and that she should get over this. This was all afternoon yesterday, and all night last night. She had done this the first day, and then stopped and got the hang of the Mommy thing. She would stay with them all the time, and never heard anything from her, until she needed to go outside, and then would lie right back down with them. We are putting the heating pad back in with the pups for when she is not with them. Here are my thoughts...Should we move them to a different area of the house and see if that helps Princess stay with them, because she won't be all alone, she'll be in a room with us as well? Does she think with the stitches the pups are in pain, and crying in pain and doesn't know how to help them? Is she mad that others have handled her pups, and she can smell it? Also, how often and how long do the pups need to nurse now? They are all about 7 - 8 oz. Thanks for everything! Audrey |

| That is good news. The poor things they just don't understand, and cannot make us understand. I hope all is well from here on. |

| It's hard to understand sometimes why they react the way they do. I'm glad things are back on track now. They should nurse for at least 6 weeks. I let mine nurse as long as the mother will. A lot of times they'll nurse morning and night until even 10 weeks, but I do introduce very liquified foods around 4 weeks old. |

| I always take the mom with the pups when the pups get their tails docked and dew claws removed (I assume that is what was done to your pups). Glad everything is back to normal.

The Vet wouldn't allow me to bring the Mom. He said the Mom's sometimes get aggressive when they try to handle the pups. I offered to wait there with the Mom while the pups went back and they said no. That I had to drop them off at noon and pick up at 3. I was not allowed to wait there, and they did not want me bring the Mom there either. | |

| I was not very happy about it either. I did call and talk to the Vet though, and he said that surgeries and procedures for the day are done each day between 12 and 3 p.m. So all animals having procedures done for the day must be dropped off prior to 12 noon. I guess they don't see other patients during that time, they only do procedures and operations. When I dropped the pups off, I asked and they said there were 4 cats and 2 dogs there having other procedures done. That is why they wouldn't let me bring Princess in there. It is not like I am making an appt and having the procedure done while I wait. I didn't even see the Dr. That day, just dropped off the pups and spoke to the nurse. He said he wanted to keep them untl 3 to make sure there was no bleeding and that they handled the procedure ok. The nurse told me they had a heating pad the entire time they were there. Does this all seem odd? They said they do it that way all the time, and never had any problems. |

I would think that the pups would have to nurse during that 3 hour period you dropped them off Glad everything turned out OK.

I think the hospitals do more elaborate surgeries than the small town vets.
