| Uterine Infection I had read several posts about breeders that have lost a mother yorkie due to uterine infection. I was just wondering what exactly it is, most of the time I heard it is after the puppies were born. Also is there a way to detect early or even prevent it from happening???

| breeding I have bred for 33 yrs and never had a bitch with an infection after whelping or before. I have known many, many breeders who have had it occur more then once.. needing emergancy spayings..a few have lost their bitches. I have been asked for advise many times..and I have no clue if anything I do works, but this is my routine before and after breeding...males and females were not kept together. I find male urine to be the worst place for bacteria to grow..female urine sure isn't perfume, but it is not the same. I allowed my males play time with the girls..they socialized..if they were together indoors with the girls I put belly bands on the boys. Twice a year everything was removed from the rooms and the entire spaces were washed down with chlorox..all pens were power washed, floors were power washed..walls..EVERYTHING! At others times I just maintained normal cleaning. After whelping the girls were given a clean out shot of oxie. I took their temps for a week following whelpings..if it spiked, they were put on meds for a week. I use RubberMade bins for moms/pups..and bedding is changed daily if need be..I use the small quilted bed pads..they make them the size of the bins. You can turn them over and use both sides for more wear. I am a fanatic on keeping mom clean..the first week I bathe the rear end with Chlorhexaderm/rinse well...takes a few minutes with the dryer. Best wishes |

| Oxytocin is a hormone produced by the pituitary gland. A shot is recommended by most vets after whelping to casue the uterus to contract and expell any retained placenta/afterbirth etc...it must be adminstered by a knowledgable breeder or vet. I wash the bins outside, weather permitting (since I moved to Florida the weather is always permitting) I use a disinfectant like Lysol, Mr Clean..rinse well and let them dry in the sun...or you can towel them dry..make sure to rinse well..sometimes the moms will lay up against the box and get it a bit messy..so I use Baby Wipes to clean the inside when it happens.. |

| How soon after the mother whelps do you have to give her the shot? I like to keep everything clean and was planning on using lysol to clean the whelping box. Did you build yours or did you buy it? Thanks for all of the information, I really appreciate it!!!!

| The bitch should be given a shot within 24 hrs. It is best it have the vet look at her and palpate to make sure all pups are out. You are wise to have had an xray done the week before whelping..if there are 4 pups, then you do not go to bed until 4 pups have been born...see my point? I use plastic RubberMade bins for whelping boxes...they make all sizes. I used to buy a cheap $10 oversized plastic cat litter box...these can be replaced whenever needed...I do not like a large whelping box...you need enough room for mom to lay comfortably, a place for bedding, heating pad under the box, not in it...a place that is not warm for mom to move to if she is too hot..but the pups can stay on the heated area. I like cheap boxes because I want several and I want to replace often...the short sides at first and the taller sided in a couple weeks when the pups can stand up. A friend had a carpenter build some very expensive wooden boxes...they are not good at all..you can not clean wood, pups, even a bored mom will chew on the edges..best wishes |

Pat gave you excellent advice!! I would not recommend daily using lysol around the pups and mom...I use Odoban diluted, you can find it at most Sams club, some Walmarts and some Home depot or online, I have had great results and it smells wonderful. http://cleancontrol.com/OdorOdoBan.html
