The bitch should be given a shot within 24 hrs. It is best it have the vet look at her and palpate to make sure all pups are out. You are wise to have had an xray done the week before whelping..if there are 4 pups, then you do not go to bed until 4 pups have been born...see my point?
I use plastic RubberMade bins for whelping boxes...they make all sizes. I used to buy a cheap $10 oversized plastic cat litter box...these can be replaced whenever needed...I do not like a large whelping box...you need enough room for mom to lay comfortably, a place for bedding, heating pad under the box, not in it...a place that is not warm for mom to move to if she is too hot..but the pups can stay on the heated area.
I like cheap boxes because I want several and I want to replace often...the short sides at first and the taller sided in a couple weeks when the pups can stand up.
A friend had a carpenter build some very expensive wooden boxes...they are not good at all..you can not clean wood, pups, even a bored mom will chew on the edges..best wishes |
