| Entire litter died! My Bitch whelped a litter of 6 on day 53 and the entire litter has died. One was stillborn, 2 died on day 2, 2 died on day 5 and 1 on day 6. I took them to the vet on day 2 and was told that they were all under developed, premature and would most likely not survive. I have whelped more than 10 litters and have never lost a puppy. I've seen weak, fading puppies that needed to be tube fed but they survived. My Bitch had a very easy pregnancy and in her final weeks I never allowed her to jump, exercise or rough play. I even carried her up and down the stairs to conserve her energy and discourage injury as her abdomen was gigantic. I did use a new stud that I had never used before. He is a proven stud with healthy offspring who I did observe. The puppies were initially fed by mom but as they continued to weaken, I started bottle, tube and syringe feeding. I did encourage mom to lick them and stimulate them to pee & poo. Can anyone offer an other opinion of what might have occurred to cause the deaths of all 6 puppies? I'm so saddened and now I have to emotionally nurse my Bitch back. She's so depressed! I've done as much as I can to remove items from the room that would remind her of them but I know their smell will continue to be in the air.

| I am very sorry for your loss. Unless you had a necropsy done on the pups you will never know for sure and anything said here will only be conjecture. My experience with breeding is rather limited, but I have a support team of very experienced breeders to call upon when I have questions. My two girls are both champions, I have a long standing knowledge of their ancestry. I always rely on the breeder of my bitches to select a sire because she is vastly knowledgeable and has a good understanding of the genetics and what lines compliment each other. I feel that relying on her gives me a headstart towards having healthy pups. I always encourage pregnant bitches to be active. This helps to promote overall good health, muscle tone and appetite. During the last few weeks I do try to discourage over-exertion. Once again, I am so sorry for your tragic loss. Last edited by chattiesmom; 02-12-2017 at 06:06 AM. |

| I am very sorry for your loss. I have raised yorkies for over 18 years and during that period I have lost a couple of litters due to early birth. One happened when the pregnant female was laying on the floor next to a arm chair and one of my other yorkies fell off the armchair and landed hard on the pregnant female. Within a few hours she started having pups and none of them made it. On the other occasion we had company for a few hours and I had put the dogs in another room and it stressed out the pregnant mom and she went into labor early. The lesson I learned there is that when a female is pregnant do not put her in a situation where she will get stressed out. It is possible that your girl was just not able to carry such a large litter. Although I have had large litters in the past where all the pups were just fine is is possible with some females their womb just cannot handle a large litter.

| Thanks "Chattiesmom" & "BJH". Talking about the loss is helping me and both of you made some noteworthy input. I do have a mentor who has been breeding and whelping Yorkies for almost 20 years. She was prepared and on notice to attend my Bitch's whelping but since Versace wasn't due until the 14th, my mentor was out of town on the day that the premature labor began because she wanted to be home close to the 14th. I had a feeling that I would need her. When I saw there was a problem, I immediately took them to my vet. "Chattiesmom" you're correct! Even the conclusions that my vet made are merely conjecture! I still have 3 of the deceased puppies bodies refrigerated, as I was planning to have them cremated on Monday. Couldn't bring myself to just dispose of them. I think I'll call my vet to complete a necropsy since I really would like to know what happened. "BJH", that's amazing how sensitive the dogs are to injury or sudden changes. Sometimes we underestimate them. I would never have guessed that premature whelping could be caused due to that level of stress. Thanks for sharing! Versace is being spoiled, cuddled and loved to help her move forward from her loss. At 3 a.m. she went downstairs looking for her babies. Watching her nearly broke my heart!

| I know nothing we say is going to fix what happened but I hope you at least feel a little better knowing you're not alone! I went through something similar with my Mimi. It was her first litter and also my first time breeding. She had all the medical attention and care that I could have possibly given her and EVERYTHING was perfect. She held the puppies all the way to her due date and a few days before something just seemed off.. Anyway long story short, she needed an emergency c-section to get the puppies out. They had been dead inside of her for a few days and were starting to decompose. It was not only extremely shocking to go into the vet expecting to leave with a litter of 4 puppies and a healthy mom, but incredibly sad. I was SO excited for these puppies; I was planning on keeping two of them and I not only lost the entire litter but almost killed my dog too by getting her pregnant. I was depressed for a long time and even thinking about it now I get teary eyed and get sad. I have 4 little angel boys looking waiting for me & their mommy when this life ends for us. Think of them as little angels waiting for you to meet again some day Remember, all dogs go to heaven! I hope I made you feel a little bit better..be grateful that they didn't suffer for a longer period of time and that you still have your other babies with you <3 |

Donating YT 2000 Club Member | I'm so sad for you loss. Any chance you had taken your girl to the dog park? Or the vet? Or a dog show?? I lost a Biewer litter about 10 years ago--I had her in a dog show--vet said she had either caught dog show crud or herpes. She went on to have two healthy litters. |
