| Universal Kennel Club International??? I tried posting this in the general discussion yesterday and didn't get any response. Hopefully someone here might have some insight for me. "I don't have much experience, so I'm hoping someone can tell me anything about Universal Kennel Club International?? Or even about registering pups for that matter. There was a thread last week about Irish Puppy Mills (sorry don't know how to attach a link to a thread) which caught my attention because my Dublin came from Celtic Irish Puppies on Long Island and she brings her pups over from 'her sister's farm in Ireland'. Well, I pulled out the papers from the breeder, and the registration that I thought was from an overseas outfit is for Universal and they are from NY. Then today I went with a friend (here in Jersey) to pick up her new Cavalier King Charles, and the registration papers he gave her was for Universal, too. Her breeder said that that was who they use when they aren't planning on breeding or showing a pup because it was cheaper that AKC. He was obviously a small time breeder who was really into the pups as they were really particular about letting my friend 'apply to buy' one. He said that they used Universal when the pups weren't for breeding or for show because it was expensive to register with AKC. (My friend had to sign papers saying she would spay her pup and send them a note from the vet to prove it.) On the Universal website, it looks to me like just anybody can get papers from them. You can even buy a pedigree. What is that all about? Are they just printing things out at random? http://universalkennel.com I got my little Dublin purely to be a member of my family, and really don't even care about registering, but I just am dying to know more. I tried googling the breeders name and to come up with more info, but got no where. How can I find out more??? I know the breeders name, his location in Ireland, and Dublins parents names. Any help at all would be appreciated!" Breeders Info: John Stack Dromcollogher, Co Limerick, Ireland Sire: Parnell's Pal UKCI Dam: Lady Debbie UKCI Litter#: 2B9-1872 7564

| Thanks Sylvan, The website is up now. I know it was down last week when you tried to check. Then this weekend I was really surprised to find my girlfriend's breeder using Universal too. With my little guy coming over from Ireland, I was concerned about the whole puppymill factor, but the guy this weekend is definately a small-time caring breeder. I didn't want to say anything in front of my friend, because I didn't want her to be upset as her pup was obviously healthy, well loved, and well cared for (which I guess is what I came away with when buying Dublin - except I didn't see his parents) and I don't really understand what Universal is. Thanks again for any insight!

| The only thing I can tell you is that my Maggie is registered with UKC. Maggie's breeder has about four sets of parents that are her breeding stock. All of her dogs are registered with UKC. There was NOT a clause stating that the pups would not be qualified to show or breed with the UKC papers. I'm with you. I could care less if Maggie was registered on Mars. I love her and that is all that matters.

| I'm feeling better.. So Brenda, you know that Maggie didn't come from a puppy mill then? And I guess UKC is the same as UKCI? I was just afraid that UKCI is something that the millers use to get around registering dogs. Dublin seemed to come from a 'good home' but when I read that article that someone posted last week about the Irish puppy mills, I kinda freaked. It sounded like the story I was told. Until then I really didn't pay much attention to the registration papers. Little Dublin is happy and (knock-on-wood) healthy and he joined the family without seeming stressed... Thanks,

| I keep running into dead ends trying to find more info. The biggest red flags I'm seeing with the UKCI site are the multiple discounts, register so many, get so many free..and the show site doesn't have any information on upcoming or past shows, just that they are willing to sanction them. The foundation stock guidelines seem to be really loose?? Seems like you can get a certificate for just about anything. They don't have any breeders listed for Ireland, and I'm checking international info for the breeder, but coming up with nada so far. I wouldn't worry much since your guy is healthy and happy and you are not interested in breeding him. Even if he did come from a mill, you didn't know and you won't love him any less for it. It would just be nice to know if Celtic is brokering for mills, but it's not good just to assume that without more info. Wasn't someone going to ask her if they could go see the parents while they were visiting Ireland? |

I work for an Irish company, so maybe I'll email her and see if one of my counterparts can "buy a dog over there" from her sister... Thanks for looking at Universal. It looked too fishy to me, too.

Donating YT 2000 Club Member | If you are looking for a registered USC breeder go their website. UKCI is an international registry. Check YTCA for Yorkie breeders. |
