| Bile Acid Test for puppies? Hi there! Thought the breeders forum might be the most appropriate place to post this question. Is it practical to do a bile acid test as protocol before pups go home at twelve weeks? I know you have to fast the puppy for twelve hours beforehand, when would the risk of hypoglycemia be low enough to fast such a small pup like a yorkie to run the BaT? Do you/are you familiar with anyone who does the BaT as a pre placement protocol? Looking forward to your reply, thanks guys!

| I've been told the test is unreliable at such a young age.

YT 500 Club Member | My pup was tested at 5 months then neutered a month later. He also had complete blood work done before The bile acid test. Thank God everything was great. My breeder told me in 25 years of breeding Yorkies he only had 1 with a liver shunt. I'm just very paranoid parent.

| The breeder I got Katie from BAT tests her puppies. Katie was three when she joined our family, but my dear friend Jackie's Que Tee, also from the same breeder, was tested before she left, and she was only 12 weeks old. The test should be repeated at six months, however.

| Thank you for your answers guys. I called my vet to inquire their position as well. They said as long as they were fully on solid food, said approx eight weeks old. My big worry was if it would put the pup at risk for hypoglycemia at such a young age, fasting for twelve hours. If it is pretty commonly done I would be less concerned. It sounds like it is not super conclusive in general and easy to falter in correctly following the protocol.

I wouldn't take the risk at that young age, sometimes when a young pup goes down it is hard to bring one back, my Micah was about seven months when he was tested and diagnosed with MVD he was treated at UT in Knoxville. he is going to be seven yrs in october this year and is doing fine, i highly recommend UT to anyone they are among the best
