| Becoming a responsible breeder Hello to all!! We have had yorkies for many years and LOVE the breed. We have very few if any responsible breeders in our state. I would love to become a responsible breeder and find a mentor to help me with this. I was a not so responsible breeder of one litter several years ago. Things turned out well. But, although I researched and educated myself like crazy I knew it wasn't the proper way of doing it. The puppies were not sold but given as pets to friends and family. We had a total of 4 puppies, the runt was rejected by the mother around day 5 and despite our enormous attempts to keep him going he died at 10 days old. The other 3 puppies were happy and healthy. But I LOVED every minute of the experience. So, now I would like to purchase and breed yorkies the right way. Making sure to do things right. I would probably only be a very small breeder. Maybe starting with 2 females and a male. Any help would be greatly appreciated. As well as information on finding a mentor. |

| I usually get my males first and then buy females to compliment him and his traits. Some people suggest getting the female first but I like getting the males first that way I know when the females are ready to breed later down the line the male will be ready too. As far as a mentor I would think that would be your breeder who ever you choose I mean who else knows their lines better than the actual breeder. They'll be able to tell you what bloodlines do best with there's what faults if any tend to pop up with their lines. Good luck hopefully you're as prepared as you seem because breeding isn't all rainbows and sunshine and puppy kisses a lot of times it goes very very wrong and quick thinking and instincts are the only difference between life and death. |

| I am interested also. I have a male and I'd like to find him a mate one day. He's only 3, so I'm in no rush. My daughter will be going to college in a few years and I'll be one of those "empty nesters" so I think that may be my time to find a female. I've breed bloodhound puppies before and it's not something I want to make a career out of, but I would like to have a litter or two eventually. I am trying to do research now so that when I'm ready, and can give my full attention to the situation, I can start. Where would I find a "mentor"? I'm sure on this site, but I'd like to find one in NC. Thanks!

| Dog shows are the best place to find mentors. It may take awhile and might take awhile to gain their trust and such.

| Like Wyliesmom said , it is so nice to hear folks giving thoughtful though to future breeding. And, like Lovestodream pointed out dog shows are key places and people to talk with. What I have learned is that the really good and successful breeders have been doing it for decades! So if you have a breeding potential one needs to hook up with those vastly experienced folks. To do that you are going to need the geniology of your pup for a number of generations. Without that you won't get much discussion with these mentors. It, it sounds like these folks are thinking ahead and are interested in being the kind of breeders we need for our breed. Keep it up! You are the future!!!
