| WHEN is a breeder a breeder? This may sound like a wierd question and I hope no one is offended by it as that is not my intent (I COME IN PEACE...lol), but I noticed on the Breeder Facts thread that some of you say you have been breeding yorkies longer than you have been having litters, some by as much as 3 years. As a lay person I just assumed that you weren't a breeder until you had a litter or until you had a pregnant female. When is a breeder a breeder? When they start researching it? When they decide they are going to breed? When they buy their first breeding dog? When they have their first litter? or something else? |

| Here's my opinion... Once a person intentionally puts two animals together and creates new life, they are a breeder. It can be a GOOD one, a BAD one, or one WITH or WITHOUT knowledge, doesn't really matter when describing the term "breeder". This could go for dogs, cats, rabbits, cows, horses, whatever. If a person intentionally creates life among living creatures, I would have to say they are a breeder. |

| You are a Breeder, when you breed (Mate a female with a Male ) and whelp a Litter. Plus most Breeders raise and place the pups to. Then the cycle goes on and on.

| question I can buy a violin, I can look at it, handle it, listen to violin music, talk to other violinists, go to concerts..but until I learn to play it, I am not a violinist, right? The word "breeder" is one who reproduces animals...not reading, studying, learning..but doing it. Putting into practice. IMO BUT...the preparation will determine how good a breeder a person will be..and anyone who prepares well is to be commended..most do not. |

| Breeder In my opinion (for what it is worth) a breeder becomes a breeder when they actually breed.. I spent two years researching the yorkshire terrier breed and the lines, before I actually ever bred for a litter of puppies.. I wanted to know the aspects to breeding/showing as well.. I also went to many many conformation shows, before I even went into a show ring.. I did research on the genetic defects of the yorkshire terrier and what lines I wanted to be a part of my program along with the lines I wanted nothing to do with.. Honestly what makes me sick to my stomach is when people just throw two dogs together for breeding and NEVER do any of the necessary homework to make sure they are breeding for healthy pups above all else! It amazes me how many so-called breeders cannot even tell you what is in their dogs pedigree, if they even know what a pedigree is! |

A breeder is a person who practices the vocation of mating carefully selected specimens of the same breed to reproduce specific, consistently replicable qualities and characteristics. on the breeder facts thread http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=27267 I have four yorkies that are just for lovin' at the present time. Do you intend in breeding your kids in the future "at the present time" are your words, which implies perhaps youre considering it in the future.

| I would agree, IMO, you would be classified as a breeder when you can consider the litter "your own," if that makes any sense at all. I guess my answer on the other thread was not a clear one and somewhat confusing. (It seemed so to me when I re-read it.) I would have to say that technically, I have been a breeder since August, but I studied and whelped under other breeders/mentors beforehand...which IMO is a neccessity and very important to experience first hand before proceeding on your own. But hey, we all gotta start somewhere, right! |

Now if it was "good breeder" it would be something else.

| Maybe mine was confusing... I do agree with everyone..but I don't explain it the same way. I usually say I've been a breeder for 5 yrs but only had pups the past 3. Doesn't really make sense now that Pat used the Violin analogy. I guess I've only been an active breeder for 3 yrs..lolol. Ok.. |

Really though the reason I started the thread was that several breeders on here say thay have been "breeding yorkies" for longer than they have had litters. I like the defintition too...where is it from? Last edited by SoCalyorkiLvr; 01-06-2006 at 08:01 PM. | |
