As a lay person I just assumed that you weren't a breeder until you had a litter or until you had a pregnant female.

When is a breeder a breeder? When they start researching it? When they decide they are going to breed? When they buy their first breeding dog? When they have their first litter? or something else?
Interesting question. IMO, a hopeful breeder starts with research. That dream comes one step further when they purchase their first dam all the way up until they have their first litter. Even after they've had a litter, some people may not consider themselves a breeder. It could have been a one time affair. If they are serious about it, they will continue to breed the best to the standard as they can. All of this is JMO and some may see it completely different.
