Congratulations to you and especially Shy and her four girls. I was so glad to read how well the whelp went and look forward to seeing pictures when you get a chance.

Packin up to take them to appointment. I have the temp at exactly 90f on one side and around 80 on other end. I think she's faking her energy levels. I had roommate watch them for a half hour or so and grabbed some McD's. As soon as I walked in, opening the bag, she popped up begging lol! No junk for her for a long while.

Thanks for keeping us updated on Shy. Glad she made it through it all ok.

Here's myyyy... seventh(?) scary moment. The first one came out in her sac. It was almost impossible to tell if she was moving. I was on the phone with the ER right then...

Not to sound too soft, but, I will say I almost cried once she popped out of her sac and instantly was moving around! The ER vet nurse on the phone must have heard it in my voice. I was literally speechless!

Shy and her girls feeling a little better by the time they got to the vet. She almost instantly filled with milk when they came. And they really go for it too! Even being more or less blind (closed eyes) they know where to go.

I added a few more in an album. I had my GoPro all setup to video the event, but, once it all started happening I was only focused on Shy. I had to keep reminding myself that it was HER whelping, not mine. Every time she took a break to clean pups orjust rest, I started to tell her to push. And had to tell myself to let her get to it when she is ready. The waiting was almost the hardest part.

Thanks to everyone for the help and advice. Shy and I couldn't have done it without you. Well, I suppose I was the one who couldn't have. She seemed like she had it under control. I only helped her with two to come out and helped her contractions on a couple.

I'll post more as the days and weeks go by.

Shy has such a sweet face especially after all her hard work. Thanks for the pictures, I have never seen an actual birth/whelp. I look forward to more pictures of your gorgeous family.

So far the day and night is going well. I do have one that seems to cry a bit. I've witnessed them all feed and the temp at one end is 86 and the other is 90. In the "pack" when they're bunched up under Shy, it's an average of 93. The crying girl doesn't take to bottle or when I get her to a teet. I always see Shy cleaning all of their little droppings, so I am pretty sure she's eating. None were really crying at the vet earlier. One way I get her to stop is when I hold her, but, after a minute or two Shy gets anxious that I have her. Is the crying just unavoidable at times? I mean I have the temps monitored and I've seen them all latched on. (though I don't know how often the one eats) When she does cry, it seems to go for a few minutes then stop for a few minutes. She does nestle up to mom normally and not being pushed away.

Crying is normal if it is just occasional, like if the momma is cleaning them, if they get separated from the group, if momma leaves them for a moment or if they are hungry. A puppy that has a steady cry usually has a problem. You need to make sure all the puppies are latching on. For example, a puppy with a cleft palate will try to nurse but will be unable to latch.

The puppies should have round bellies. They should be eating every couple of hours. As they get older they will not eat as often.

Make sure momma is not to hot. If the momma gets to hot it will slow down her milk production. Is the momma eating well?

Momma is well. Not too hot. The warmest it's been in tye pack was 94. I tried feeding her but she didn't seem to want it. I manually opened her mouth to help her latch and she sort of did.... I went to bed at about 230 and when I got up a couple hours ago, I found she passed. I'm pretty sad about it. She was the first one out and made me so happy to see when she came...
I tried for about 20 mins to rub her but nothing. She was cold so she probably passed shortly after being left with mom. All the others may have been pushing her out of the way. When I was latching her I was getting all the other 3 trying to push her out of their way...

Has anyone lost neonatal pups before? This really sucks a lot. if my roommate weren't here, I dunno. I'm not a softie normally except for my family. My pets are my family too.

I am sorry the little one did not make it. Yes, sometimes newborns will die for a variety of reasons. If she had a cleft palate she would not have been getting the nutrition she needs. That is why is it so important to know soon after the pups are born if they are all able to latch on tightly. Also that is why you monitor their weight gain.

I will also say something that I have been quiet about but I feel that it needs to be said. After seeing the pictures of the momma whelping the puppies I was shocked that you just let the momma do everything. I don't believe in just letting the momma rely on her natural instincts. By letting the momma cut the cords you are risking the lives of the babies because sometimes a momma will cut the cord to short and expose the insides of the pups. Sometimes the momma will chew off a foot while cutting the cords. Also by letting the puppy lie there in the sack the puppy could have been inhaling fluids into it's lungs. The first pup could of been in the birth canal too long. Instead of calling ER you should of been working the puppy out of the birth canal, breaking the sack and getting the fluids out of her lungs. I am not saying this to be harsh but just so you will know that if you whelp another litter it is recommended that you be more hands on and don't be just a spectator.

For now it is very important that the momma eats lots of food. What have you been feeding her prior to her having puppies? You need to try to keep her on her basic diet but you can add some canned puppy food (I prefer Pedigree canned puppy food mixed with Pedigree Healthy Digestion). You can scramble her some eggs. You probably will need to hand feed her for awhile. Keep a close eye on the momma's teats. If they start getting hard and red then that is a sign she is getting mastitis and she would need to go to the vets.

I have used Chicken Soup For the Puppy Lover's Soul dry food for years and have been very happy with it. I just add a little canned food to encourage the momma to eat better. Over the years I have had some females that would eat nothing but canned food for the first few days or so after they had their pups. The most important thing is that they eat a good balanced meal.

Also I meant to mention that the new momma should be given a calcium supplement.

Two cords I clamped with hemostats and cut with bandage scissors. One of them she kept trying to nibble down shorter. I kept her from doing that and eventually it dried of where i tied with suture.

The entire month before delivery she ate dry dog food, Wellness, and mixed with wet dog food. She would get a little of Blue premium wet mixed in with her Wellness. She's on the same diet. The Wellness mix is the puppy formula.

Thanks you for explaining that. Just from what you had previously posted it looked like you were just taking pictures and letting Shy do all the work. I just did not want others that are not familiar with whelping to think that it was okay to just watch. So many things can go wrong.

I am glad she is on a good food. You just need to make sure she eats about 4 times a day. If she ate all 4 afterbirth then that will effect her appetite for awhile.

I read and talked to her vet about the sacs and cord issues. I only gave Shy a few moments on the sacs and then I opened them for her. The last one I didn't want to let her eat but she practically swallowed it whole!

Wow! Through this thread I have learned some about breeding Yorkies. I am thankful for that, and should mention that it was never a thought of mine to breed my Bailey... and it sounds like it was a good thought. I certainly would have done my homework if I chose a different path though. Knowing I didn't want to breed mine, I got him fixed as soon as was possible. I can read the frustration to be on both sides of this particular thread:( I would like to believe that all responses here were done in good faith and, however they were written, with great love and compassion for Yorkies. In the end I just wish the best for Shy and her possible future pups. Cheers!
