| Breeding every heat or not....thats the ?. Ok, bottom line, I know what I think is right by my own research and studies is what matters but I really am searching to see what other breeders think on this. I have been told time and time again, (even before I really got into breeding) that It's not ok, to breed your bitch on every heat. (even if it's just once a year) BUT, for the last 2 years or so..I've been told different by my vet and quit a few other breeders since I've reached out to other breeders. I've been told it's healthier for the mama. So, what do you guys think? if done responsibly of course, is it ok to breed every heat as long as it's only once a year? my females only go into heat every 10-11 months... so naturally I bred my first yorkie 3 times before I didn't again, and then the one heat I didn't, she got sick. scared me to death. I took her to my awesome vet and they told me exactly this, if she's not getting bred (since she's your breeder) then get her fixed. otherwise her body will "freakout", as they put it, and she will end up getting sick and it's not good for her. So she is now fixed and in a great home with her baby! anyhow, this is just a general ? and I can see that this topic can become possibly hostile and i'm not looking for that. I am just looking for the factual answers on what other great breeders are thinking on this. Thankyou! |

| Wow, I never heard what you vet told you but I also have never bred any of our dogs. LOL It's a good thing that women aren't that way. Oh wait, there is PMS! LOL

| I have been told that a lot of breeders are breeding every heat (good ones not talking about bybs and puppymills) and that it is better on there bodies if there breeders but its also very important to make sure there very healthy when doing this. I am sure there are some dogs who's bodies can not handle it.

| I honestly think it depends on the female and how often she comes in heat. Some of mine come in heat every 6 months so I will not normally breed them back to back. If a females comes in heat every 9 or 10 months then it would not hurt her. Anytime you skip a heat on a female you really have to watch her for pymotra.

| Actually, according to reproduction specialists, it is better to breed every heat cycle. It is the hormones that are produced when a female is allowed to go into heat and not be bred that cause your major problems with your females, breaking them down quickly. When you retire a female, spay her immediately, again to prevent the hormones from wreacking havoc on her body. Now, it is imperative the female is healthy, getting special diet and supplements as needed for breeding stock...if you are taking care of your ladies like you would a fine tuned working dog or an athlete, then you are managing your breeding program and doing what is best for your ladies. Their bodies, when used for breeding, are exactly like an athlete...breeding is every bit as strenous as intense exercise, but if you are keeping your ladies in tip top condition, they will thrive under those conditions and you and they will be very happy with the wonderful results you both achieve together! | it really depends on your female. If she ovulates regularly (every 6 mo.) and she has no problems with her whelping and recovers nicely I would skip one season and breed the next. If your girl has trouble with regular heat cycles and is only coming in once every 9 10 months I would first of all check with your vet that she is ok hormonely (is that a word?), re: bloodwork and thyroid screening, .. obviously if she is showing a low thyroid output maybe breeding her at all is a question you need to consider. |

| I would love to hear more about this too! Great question BTW!! I've always let my ladies determine it by how well they whelped & bounced back the last time... but then forced a break after 2 back to backs in a row. Maybe I shouldn't be forcing this break after all? |
