| new user, need advice i posted this on the general discussion but im going to cross post this to maybe get seen by breeders eyes for help. im going to add a little bit more then was on there as well. hi new user/kind of new to yorkies (been around significant others family yorkies for over a year on and off). so im kind of being thrust into a pickle thats not in anyway my fault but i want to make the best of it. so long story short, their family yorkies were left alone due to whatever reasons and we found them tied up a few months back (1 male, 1 female). we were hoping for false pregnancy but i never really heard if they found out if it was or not until a few days ago when i got back in town. now i found out shes due this week and not much has been done to prepare her for her first liter. now being a broke college kid, i really cant help out with the expensive parts of the puppy birthing process (i did some research) but im just asking what to expect or any tips to look for. i want to make a whelping box for her and help make sure the puppies are ok because im going to probably end up having to take one to my house when they are old enough to leave (plus i want one). so im just nervous/curious because i have a feeling the puppies will come when im one of the only people around i know she needs to get to the vet but like i said im a broke college kid and her parents think they can handle the birth since they have had larger dogs in the past that had several litters. im just worried because the female isnt a large dog, shes a 4 pound yorkie that is a year old |

| You need to have a vet available. Things can happen. I could go on and on here. Size of male, size of female's ancestors (not just her parents). Pregnant Yorkie's age. Anyway, don't want to scare you to death, but encourage you to be ready. You can prepare a simple whelping box from a oblong plastic storage bin with something absorbent in the bottom and then the whole thing slipped inside a pillow slip. this creates a hammock type whelp area so mother can't stratch things around and cover up puppies or puppies can't wiggle and get lost in things. Change often. Some use a heating pad on low setting, i prefer hanging lamp with low watt bulb suspended safe distance for a few days. use a thermometer to keep track so won't get too hot. Good luck. |

| The owners need to get her vet this week for an x-ray! The vet will educate the owners of the risks and what they need to do. If you don't live in the same household how will you be the only one around when she delivers? |

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Very very basic. If she starts whelping and she begins delivery, if no next pup after one hour; (that is very conservative time estimate) but better to err on side of caution; she needs to be seen by the vet immediately. If she is in hard labour and no pup begins to present head after 30 minutes - again trip to the vet. Do not let her chew/cut the cord. Do it yourself. Many new and very young mom's will do damage to the pup. Please note: I am only saying these things right now because I believe the birth can be imminent and that is based on your posts. Let me be very blunt. It is very easy to lose a young female in her first whelp. She is only 4lbs so she should never have been bred, and at ONE year old... shameful. You can talk to your girlfriends parents' even show them these posts. But the bottom line is they are responsible for the care of this female of theirs. I truly hope from the bottom of my heart this young Yorkie makes it through her whelp and the nursing of the puppies.

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Sorry one last thing. I think if you notice she is in labour I highly suggest letting her owners know and DEAL with it. If they are out; call them on their cell and tell them to get home; because their baby is about to have babies.

| Only 4 pounds. How big is the father? You really need x-rays to make sure she is even able to deliver these babies. I am praying for this Momma and her babies.

| OMG this is terrible. You really need to get her to the vet and have some x-rays done to see if she is going to able to deliver. This is very scary I just can not imagine why anyone would breed an 8 pound male to a 4 pound female. This is why we should leave the breeding to the experienced breeders.

Large females can have tears in uterine walls, low and or high blood pressure during whelping, placentas can be retained etc. They can refuse to nurse and with an average litter size of about 8pups, that is a lot of pups to hand feed every two hours. And many larger breeds will actually have 9 or 10 pups, which means you as the breeder need to rotate the pups on the nipple.

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | ok, a little FYI, the size of the male and the female is NOT that important, unless the father is a great dane, the FEMALE controls the size of the babies until they are born. an X ray is GOOD to do, I do x ray all my expecting females, specially a maiden bitch, but the thought that because a male is a couple of pounds bigger than the female is an automatic c section is false. Her pelvic bone is what determines if she can deliver this puppies or not.. hugs, |
